Solar Afterthought?

When I was running the wires from my panels I did not like the fact that the wires and connectors just laid under the panels on the the roof the of RV. I did not want to use Dicor or Eternabond to hold them down I may have to service them some time.

I decided to use adhesive backed zip tie clips stuck to the underside of the solar panel. This allowed me to get the wires and branch connectors off the roof and tucked under the bottom side of the panel.

AFTERTHOUGHT WAS THIS OK? It looks great!

My solar install is complete but has not been put into actual use yet. Still waiting for that off grid boondocking trip.

I don't see any issue using zip bases on the bottom of your panels. But I also don't see a point in doing that. Normally tying cables under the panel is not an issue. The cables running between panels, and over to whatever pass-thru path you used, is where you need them secured. That's where wind, and maybe even your feet, might move them around. That's where just a dab of Dicor or short strip of Eternabond tape is quick and easy. Just every couple of feet is all you need. And it isn't an issue to slice through if you ever want to reconfigure the array or replace a panel, connector, etc. And you would not want to use those zip bases out on the interconnecting cables where UV would destroy them very quickly.

When running the solar panel cables I just did not like the cables and MC4 and Branch connectors rubbing on the roof membrane.

The cables are routed under the panels and only exit out at the last panel. At that point the cables are covered with Eternabond for about 18 inches from panel to where the cables enter the refrigerator vent.

If the cable ties don't work I will go back to using Eternabond strips and try to keep any movement to a minimum.

An alternative would be some sticky back velcro to the underside of panel. Then just run the wire between the two pieces.

If you have to pull it apart, it's easy and goes back together in a second.
Am installing two 100 watt panels in the front of our camper to combine with our 170 watt panel in the rear and was trying to figure out a good way to run the cables back to the 170 watt panel where the 3 in 1 combiner will be located.

Looks like I'll be buying some white velcro and stick it down with VHB tape.

    Thanks!

  • Should work.

  • As long as those zip tie clips are not in sunlight you will be fine. The adhesives used on them usually does not like uv rays.
  • Sounds fine to me. My cable just sits on the roof with no harm done.
