Spring Goof....but my brain started before I ordered parts!

First camping of the season. Work out the kinks. Get back into the swing of things.Check out all the systems before any big summer trips. Okay?

Get backed into the fourth site I tried in a nearly empty State Park campground, only to realize I was going the wrong way and the sites were angled away from me! Okay,I didn't forget absolutely everything about backing a fiver over the winter!

Spend the night without the need for hot water. This morning, however the DW wants to clean up. Lets the water run till she feels warm coming, then hops in and gets wet, head-to-toe before the water turns to ice. After I climb down from the ceiling fan as a reaction to the scream, I switch from elec. to propane and wait a bit.

I empty the basement so I can get to the water heater. Check all the components, except this little black box. I've worked on hundreds of domestic water heaters of the 240 volt variety, and none of them had anything like this. Turns out it's a relay for the 120 volt system. I dion't have a way to test this easily, so I look for a tech sheet for my model on the internet.

Find, the PDF, download and open it. Find the relay and which leads need power to make the switch close. After figuring all that out I see a diagram at the bottom, labeled..... wait for this..... "Winterize" and "In Use"! Yep, You guessed it, I forgot to turn the by-pass valve back on before we left home. Just glad I didn't order a bunch of parts from Amazon, like I usually do!

Ok, I fessed up. Any more Spring boneheads out there? Come on, now Guys and Gals, I know I'm not alone. Anybody else willing to look stupid for the greater good?
  • I noticed Moen has an LED digital bath water temperature controller. Don't remember the pricetag but it was enough to shiver me timbers...

Hope you didn't tell your wife that you found the problem was something you forgot to do. Best to order some parts, not necessarily water heater parts, then after they come in tell her you fixed the problem.:)
Much safer than telling her you forgot to change from winterize to usage mode.

Yes, yes, yes. Great time to order some other do-dad you have been wanting. Get it overnighted as well....cause we would not want HER to suffer any longer then neccesary. :B

When the wife asks me to do ANYTHING around the house, I ALWAYS get a new tool out of it. She doesn't know what I have, or what I need for HER little project....:W

  • I locked myself out last weekend. Forgot the danged keys. "What are you so mad about?" asked my 8-year old neighbor's son.

I confessed to an eight year old...

"Oh that's OK", he reassured. "All the windows are wide open"
  • I ordered a power conditioner and I wanted to have it inside/inline instead of the plug into the pedestal type. So I discover the new bus has a power cord with plugs on both ends, not like the old bus where the power cord went directly to the transfer switch. I guess I need to get a range cord and wire it in after the transfer switch, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But the intention was to protect against funky CG power.

Also, I had to replace the backup camera and monitor after ripping out the overhead TV (which doubled as a backup camera monitor). I neglected to check what cable it used, because I have coax running from the back. Now I'll have a bunch of RCA to audio conversion plugs in there.
  • Now that you have found out that you also need 12Vdc power in order for your Atwood WH to work on 120V AC.......did you have water in the WH tank when you turned the electric element ON??

Cause IF you had 12V DC power and 120V AC power BUT no water in WH tank then you will get to replace the element.....they burn out when NOT in water.

And just for giggles...........I never tell on myself. :B
