starting a Yamaha 3000 iSEB in extreme cold

Hi Folks,

I found a magnetic "stick on" electric heater that is thin enough to slide just under the case on the exhaust side of the generator. It does 200 watts and if I tuck a blanket around the generator should get it warm enough to start fairly quickly.

As a side bonus, if necessary, I can use that same heater on my propane tank.

Just in case I also added a charging cable that I can power from the 7 pin connector, or from a battery charger, or from a "snap pack".

I don't think I'll have any issues with starting now, but I will migrate to 5-30 Amzoil fully synthetic for the winter.
  • One thing to watch for in extreme temps that we had to deal with on a open frame Yamaha was the crankcase vent condesation would freeze and eventually block the vent and the pressure would push a crank seal out. I wouldnt think it would happen on enclosed inverter style but you never know.
  • You shouldn't have any issues with starting problems using 200w of contact heater. The Amzoil is a good alternative, also.
Heck, I have 4-8 HP snowblowers filled with 10w-30, left to the elements, that start after a few pulls.
