Toilet bowl wouldn't stop filling

Wound up with a flooded bathroom due to the toilet bowl overflowing. Fortunately it was fresh water and not the black water. Turns out the water was intermittently flowing without the flush being activated. Just a brief spurt, but with nowhere else to go it would eventually overfill the bowl. I shut off the campground water supply and open faucets to depressurize the lines. Switched to the tank and pump, since I could at least shut off the water. With the pump on, everything worked fine. No more water flowing until flushed. I did notice that the water pressure from the CG was much lower than from the pump. I am wondering if the low pressure was causing the valve to not close properly. Any thoughts?

It is a Thetford toilet, about 5 yrs old.
  • After the second time my Thetford overflowed, I swapped it for a Dometic 320. Best move ever. The Thetford is notorious for not completely closing the input water valve. Change the valve if you want, but it will fail again.

I installed a shut-off vavle in the supply line just in case. It came in handy on our last TT when the toilet did the same thing yours did.

X2 - That's one of the first mods I've made on every toilet equipped RV we've owned.

X3. I also added a shut off valve.

I was lucky . . .:R . . . When my valve failed I was using the pump -- not connected to city water. I heard the pump continue to run so was able to prevent a major flood. I took the valve apart and clean it and added some grease. It has been working for 2 years of fulltiming now.

You problem may have been a one time problem with some "trash" keeping the valve open.
  • I don't think low water pressure had anything to do with the toilet overflow - water valves in toilets fail and many people who have owned RV's have experienced problems with their toilets. It's one of the reasons that many RV owners will turn off shore water anytime they leave their rig unattended.
