Toy Hauler needs new roof - what to do

Our 2008 FunFinder Xtra 190 is in excellent condition, except for the roof membrane.  It needs replacing and we don't know the roof's condition underneath.  The interior and all appliances are in excellent condition and working well.  We are older campers and are not going to travel any more.  The only issue with the unit is the roof.  We don't know whether to invest in the cost of a new roof. or try to sell it at a minimal price and hope there is a buyer who will bear the cost to end up with a good toy hauler.  Cost estimates range from $6,000-$7,500 for the roof depending on what is found when the membrane is removed.  What would you do?

  • Never a good plan to spend what a vehicle or toy is worth, to fix one component of it.
    You’d be sinking $6k into a $6k camper. (Or whatever it’s worth)

  • I’m pretty sure the majority of roofs on RV’s are fully adhered. Which means there is no such thing as saving the substrate. Portions of the luan underneath will separate and be pulled up as you pull up the membrane, rendering the existing substrate unsuitable for new membrane installation.

My RV roof doesn't have luan. It's OSB. The EPDM roof will come off the OSB.

  • If the intention is to sell it...repair or no repair..., I would just sell it as is and take whatever is offered. the cost of the repair is pretty much equal to the resale value and who knows what you will find when they open things up.

If you really like it, maybe it has sentimental value and you will continue to use it, I might be tempted to have it repaired.

  • If there are no soft spots in the sub roof (carefully walk on the roof to see how much deflection there is) then I would recover it. A soft spot or two - probably OK. A lot soft? Get rid of it. But you can replace the subfloor if you have the $$.
