Things other than distance can interfere with the signals your sensors send to your monitor. Nav systems, other electronics, even glass according to the MinderResearch VP I talked with recently.
Personal choice, but I tend to agree with you: I really want my safety equipment to work as well as it possibly can.
Seems like that shouldn't cost $50 extra. Again, that's jmho.
