vacuum gauge

I have located a bolt on top of the intake manifold on the drivers side on my 454.I would like to install a vacuum gauge their.I know i would have to unscrew this bolt and attach some kind of fitting.I have no idea how or what to use in the place of the bolt as a fitting.May it be rubber or metal. Can someone give me an idea of how to go about this?

  • I turned one of my CTD manifold bolts into a boost bolt by drilling a tiny hole thru it and silver soldering a brass fitting to it. Craig

path1 I did the same thing as your father-in=law. The only disadvantage is that I have to look down a little so I put a pointer (black tape) at 10 in so I can glance at it and try to kept above the line. Joe I hooked mine into the intake manifold using a threaded fitting into the manifold and a barbed fitting for the hose to the vacuum gauge.
  • Don't now if you've considered how your going to mount...
Run hose thru hole in firewall and velcro'd the gauge with the metal bracket ring that they come with right into the ashtray. What a good use of space.
  • Hi,

It is much easier to tap into a existing vacuum line, and install a 3/16" tee or 1/4" tee if the line is a really large one. That way if the line melts, and say you get a large vacuum leak, it will be into a small fitting, not one with a 1/4" connection directly to the intake manifold.

Large vacuum leaks can cause pinging, and engine damage.

So look at the manifold. Look for some black tubing going from it, and one might go towards the distributor, or some other vacuum controls. Cut out about 1/2" of this and take it to the auto parts store. Buy a tee that fits that line, and connect the vacuum gauge there.

    Fred.
