vehicle tax

i have an rv that i had registered in north carolina and had been paying my annually taxes.A year ago i had let my registration expire and moved it into a storage facility in tn.I havent registered it to any state since i have put it into storage and havent had it on the road.I attempted to pay the taxes at the north carolina dmv but they didnt have any record of a payment due.Do i continue paying taxes and if so how?
  • I think my situation is similar to yours: I have a boat trailer that was previously registered in NC. I actually still have the expired tag. The trailer sits at my home and since I have a boat ramp I do not drive it on the road. I still have the old tag but have not renewed it in years. I get no notices for taxes or registration from the State of NC. Of course it would be illegal to put it on the road, but as long as it is not on the road I think I am ok. When / if you go to register and tag it again be sure they understand it has not been driven on the highway. You could call DMV and verify but I think this is correct. Don't know if you would have to pay back personal property taxes because in NC they are now tied in with DMV registration.
  • FWIW Since the camper is no longer registered in NC I don't see how they can claim you would owe any taxes. Let sleeping dogs alone. When you move to KY register it there and bite the bullet for what tax hit you get from them.
  • The property tax is paid at the DMV license plate agency now. I'm surprised they haven't been billing you for the taxes. Maybe it was in storage when they switched over a few years ago?
Mine will show the value of the trailer and the tax rate (.70 per hundred in my county).
  • I would ask the insurance company if they require a certificate of non-use and possibly the state of TN since that is where it is stored. It varies by state and previously posted. LA requires you to file non-use or the vehicle is in violation.
  • Are there taxes BESIDES the license renewal fee? Or are they just paid with the annual license? How does the state of NC even KNOW about it?

do you have it insured? I was under the impression that Insurance companies only cover vehicles that have current registration & plates on them.

I could be very wrong on that... but better to toss that out there for you to check.
I have it insured at a bussiness in ky because That is the address on my licence and that is where i plan to reside.I even went as far to explaine how i plan to register it there when that happens.I have proof for it till march of next year.

If the tax is tied to the registration, then owning an unregistered vehicle should logically not incur any tax responsibility. Certainly the 3% highway use tax would logically seem to fall into that category, since an unregistered vehicle or trailer cannot (legally) be used on the highway. Of course, applying logic to tax laws is not always successful.

If I were to go to pay tax to my state, and the state refused to take it and claimed I didn't owe it, I would generally take them at their word without too much argument. If you can find a NC DMV help line, a phone call there should help clear up the situation.
When i moved it from nc to tn it was registered. But it had run out since it had been in storage. The nc dmv told me that since the registration had expired the plates had been taken out of the system no need to send them back.No data to what owe in taxes.Do you think it would be a good idea to contact the dmv in tn and explain my situation to them and see what they say

  • Some states have a statement of "non use". Fill out the statement under penalty of purgery and you don't uave to pay past years tax. Depends on your state.
