Vinyl trim insert

Looks like the 1" vinyl trim insert (covering the screws holding the rubber roof down) needs to be replaced after 5 years.

It's stiff & shrunken and lets water in allowing the screw heads to rust.

The Camco branded stuff is easily available at Walmart and elsewhere. Camping World has something else they claim is heavier duty than the regular stuff. It's all pretty cheap.

Any preferences/opinions/suggestions/tips/funny stories?

Screw heads rusting have little if anything to do with the vinyl trim. Rusting screw heads are indicative of water under the siding / filon. Screws rust because of capillary action and the acids produced by wood rot, not moisture under the trim pieces which are there for decorative reasons.... IOW screw heads are unsightly.

One foolproof way to tell is run a screw out and look at the threaded part. If it's rusty, the issue is underneath.

Well, I peeled back the vinyl trim a bit, and water came out and the space was filled with slime. As the vinyl trim is old and loose, I'm pretty sure that's my problem.

But when I replace the vinyl, I'll pull out a couple of screws to be sure.

For peace of mind, I would if I were you. If the threads are fine, just remember to add dome sealant to the threads when putting them back in.

That screw is like a dipstick. If it's rusty, you have issue, if not, be happy.

Yes, think that's the "heavy duty" stuff I saw at Camping World.
Maybe it'll last a bit longer than the regular Camco trim?
Guess I'll give it a try.

  • Only that it is much easier to install if it's warm out and you let the vinyl lay in the sun first.
    Good luck!
