Water filters

Hi y’all! Hoppy Corona.
We have started boondocking a lot over the past 4 years and water is of course a hassle. Has anyone used a water purifier? I see some advertised that claim they will filter and purify any water. I’m not talking about recycling the black tank but maybe out
of a lake or stream. Do they work? How does the water taste?
  • After boiling it and allowing it to cool you can then run it through a filter designed for filtering out metals and chemicals
  • Might consider one of the gravity filters that campers use - plenty to choose from - Katadyn makes an 8 liter one that sells for about $100.

Iodine....that's the real way to purify water in the outback.

Yes, fresh water is the limiting factor for boondocking but lakes are nearly the last place I’d draw from. The filters work but most are not for the quantity of water that a TT would need. Consider buying 2 to 4 jerry cans and refilling (partially) with those.

Yeah, I already have the cans and a 12v pump with 10’ hose. It’s sometimes just a hassle to find, especially in places that sell bulk water. We’ve had them offer to deliver 10k gal but that’s a bit much.
  • Depends on how much water you need. We have a Katadyn Expedition that we primarily use on river trips. While it is extremely expensive, it is the gold standard for drinking water filtration. We will settle any sediment in a 5 gallon bucket using alum, pump water at about a rate of 1 gal/minute and then add 3 drops of chlorine bleach per gallon. After ~2 hour contact time we add 3 drops of hydrogen peroxide per gallon and drink.
