I have a 2002 Winnebago Adventurer 32V on the F53 chassis. There is a Banks Powerpak but I think everything else is stock. The rig has a Intellitec PMS. I noticed that with the engine running, both the house and coach batteries were charging at the same rate all the time. I assumed that there was a BIRD somewhere but can't seem to find it. Winnies literature does not mention it and I really don't see it in the house schematic and the BIRD is an after market thing for the chassis.I found that there was power going through the contacts of the solenoid for the AUX power solenoid. I checked and even disconnected the solenoid actuation wire and no change. I jumpered from the Battery to the solenoid coil and the solenoid actuated in a normal way. Now the solenoid is operating with the AUX switch but it does not seem that the engine alternator never charges the battery.I haven't had a chance to replace the AUX solenoid and I have looked and can't find the Bird.I did download the installation and trouble shooting manuals from Intellitec. I know my Bounder had the first in the series of three BIRDs but I can't find one. It is definitely not near or in the battery Aux and Disconnect solenoids.

Unless Winne has changed in the past years. Winne did not use a BIRD. They just used a standard metal solenoid, with 2 heavy cables, one on each side. When the Ignition is ON, that closes that solenoid and jumps both battery banks together. If you go to Winne's website you will be able to download the Manual and schematics for your particular model. Older Winne's had a dash switch. It was labeled MOM/AUX and was spring loaded on the MOM side. If you pushed MOM(momentary and the spring loaded side) this engaged that solenoid to use the Coach batteries to start the chassis engine when chassis was low or dead. The AUX side was NOT spring loaded and stayed in the indent and this engaged that solenoid when the Ignition was ON to charge both battery banks. The usual position was always AUX. Do you have this switch? Doug

David, you have a double-negative statement here so I'm not sure about your problem condition: "...but it does not seem that the engine alternator never charges the battery..." I mean the "not...never" part. I was looking to see where the Coach was charging the Chassis when the Converter/Charger was running. Unless the battery for the road engine is charged by the C/C part of the coach, I didn't think you had a BIRD. Seems to me that if you had a BIRD it'd be near your Isolation Device and AUX Start Relay.Glad you posted this, it's got me interested in the BIRD topic. Wish I could find a wiring diagram. Intellitec posts a .pdf data sheet but not the install instructions/owner manual.

I think I have a TECH bulletin on the BIRDs and will PM it to you if I do.Doug, My DGS uses my office for a bedroom when he stays with us and he is sleeping as only a 15 year old growing kid can, so I have to wait for him to wake up to check my schematics. I do remember seeing the schematic for the AUX and Disconnects in my set of schematics but I don't think I did a point to point look at the wires. I just figured there was the third solenoid somewhere else as shown in the Bird Schematics. You have a BIRD. IF the solenoid connected to your BIRD has Chassis on one side and the coach on the other side, You can connect the true dual mode Intellitec BIRD. You are trying to utilize the Chassis charge method when on Shore Power? If so, using the Trik-L-Start is a better way to go. Doug

I have an Intellitec IRD, not BIRD. Would changing be a simple swapout or would a Trik-L-Start make more sense?

'93 HR Imperial, Oshkosh chassis w/6BT 5.9.

Oddly, the IRD is up front on a board with what appears to be some sort of solenoid, which another solenoid resides in the battery bay.

A BIRD on RV's is a means of activating a charge solenoid system. It does 2 things.
1. Delays for a few seconds the activation of the charge solenoid to charge Both the Coach and Chassis battery banks on a motorhome
2. Some will allow the solenoid to charge the CHASSIS bank when connected to Shore Power and camping. Doug
