Worth it? Or duplicating effect

I keep a dehumidifier going when I park my class C at home. I have been thinking about bringing with me and running it ALONG with the ac. Would this be duplication of effect (removing moisture) or worth it? I want to bring with, but wifey says no reason to do so.
  • I would not run both. The dehumidifier generates heat.
The A/C should take enough moisture out of the air.
  • In high humidity and temperature conditions a simple AC may not be enough.

On the coast it is common for my AC to reduce temps into the high seventies at night
But humidity remains in the mid sixties. I had enough of that in Southeast Asia.

It is specifically called "feeling clammy". It is not pleasant

This is specifically where a dehumidifier will come into play.

A good size dehumidifier will extract another 10-15% R/H out of the air and make the room much more comfortable. The AC can easily handle a few extra degrees generated by operating a dehumidifier. You also have the option of adding a 2nd AC and operating it at very low airflow woth compressor at100% duty.

    Absolutely, positively! :B
It is not duplicating it is 'assisting' the ac to keep it cool inside.

I traveled mostly in the Midwest and had no problems with my ac keeping me cool.

THEN I headed to Florida and the ac just couldn't keep up. Called RV Mobile Repair and he said when in the southern states ADD a small portable dehumidifier to assist the ac unit.

I picked up a 'small' one from Lowes and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Within an hour the inside of my MH was WAY cooler.

I placed it by the shower and ran the drain hose into the shower drain. I was amazed just how much water it was taking out of my RV that the ac could not when parked in hot weather.

I wouldn't travel to a warm area in an RV without one.
  • Thanks! I learned something. I've been too accustomed to the northern summers.
I need to spend more time in the humid south during the summer months.
    :)
  • Depends on where you are.
Some areas of the South are Hot and Humid.
Where I was raised in Va. was that way. So was Fl.

We are near Athens Ga. and we are usually too dry year round.
In fact I run 2 "swamp coolers" aka humidifiers to get the humidity
up at home. It is frequently under 20%.
That is too dry for the A/c to feel cool and too dry in the winter
for the heat to feel warm.
  • I would take both. We are at the coast, it's been raining all day but only 68 degrees. The humidity is really high. I really don't want the AC running as I don't need it any colder -- a dehumidifier is exactly right for conditions like we have this week.

We got a small dehumidifier. It runs solo when the RV's not being used, and we run it to help with Florida humidity when we're camped. It's a great addition. Helps keeps stale smell out in storage, and definitely helps the A/C when we're using the coach.
  • Get the dehumidifier, but do not buy this kind: eva-dry dehumidifier They look and sound good, but do not work and are noisy for their size.

We bought this dehumidifier and it is great so far: RCA 70 pint dehumidifier It makes some noise, but the heat problem is not bad, and it will keep your RV at about 37%.

    Good Luck and safe travels.

    X2
And BTW, if you are in Florida and go to buy one get there BEFORE the Snowbirds do!!

When I was told I should have a dehumidifier in my MH because I was going to stay the summer I went to Lowes and ALL the shelves were empty but one lowly boxed little dehumidifier!

Clerk said I got there too late. All the Snowbirds that either have a winter house in Florida or leave their RV's here for the summer right before they leave they scarf up all the dehumidifiers!!
