Running the converter as a power supply to a battery that is being drawn down by a loaded inverter is a lot easier on it than using it to recharge the battery.
The battery voltage is lower from being loaded by the inverter so you get more amps per watt. That helps when you have a small generator. It can run more of a converter without conking out if the converter is doing power supply work instead of battery charging work.
