I have a 2013 GMC Duramax and the TCM...(transmission control module) has went bad and for a part that is not supposed to go bad why is there a national parts shortage for them. My question is has anyone else has had this problem and what was the final result of this dilemma

It happened on my 2011. At that time Kennedy diesel had the most cost effective fix IIRC I gave him my vin and he programed a new one. Service was speedy, and it was a simple plug and play.

The recession we are diving into head first will create a correction. And like the last time, many people will be screaming why did they let me buy at over value, it's there fault, not mine. Just like when people bought houses over market value, interest only loans. The market will crash - oh, wait, it is crashing...

A lot of it I chalk up to greed. Funny how late last year GM, and Ford, announced that they would be penalizing dealers by reducing or eliminating their allocation for engaging in such BS. How's that working out lol.

The automakers can only do so much because of franchise laws. Then you have the customers that buy at MSRP, and sell it higher to others, making the market adjustment their profit.

Exactly. If the dealers didn't have the markup, "customers" (i.e. CAR JOCKEYS) would buy them out and sell them for $10,000-$20,000 over MSRP themselves.

One way or another, someone's going to be raking in the cash and the end consumer is going to get soaked. It's inevitable.

The only way to avoid it is to not HAVE TO HAVE a new vehicle, NOW. Some people just HAVE TO HAVE a new vehicle. It's like an itch that can only be satisfied with a new vehicle, no matter what it costs. If you're not like that, it's no skin off your nose.

Sooner or later this will all calm back down. Sales will slow and someone will "blink." Some dealer will realize they can steal market share by selling for less, then the rest will follow suit.

Your comment about "HAVE TO HAVE" isn't all encompassing. Sure, some folks want to have latest and greatest. But there is also people that NEED a new vehicle NOW due to something happening to their old one. Maybe it was totaled in an accident. Maybe they have a vehicle that is un-driveable because it is waiting for parts.......

We're lucky cars and trucks are so reliable these days. The shortage of competent mechanics is at least as troublesome as the parts shortages. I had an older truck I liked but felt compelled to move on because I didn't have confidence I could get decent service as the inevitable age and mileage issues arose.

However, GM has set policy that employees cannot sell a vehicle for more than pay for one year after purchase. I guess I will not be selling my 3500 HD until August 15, 2023.

A great many of these very high-priced trucks on the road are actually being leased.

Thanks to NAFTA and our fearless leaders of long ago most of these parts in shortage are made in China and other foreign countries. Cheers

I talked with sales and asked if they would come off the market adjustment. I already knew the answer. They explained that the higher trade in values offset it lol. Then I sent them the VIN of my current truck and a bunch of pictures so they could proceed to make a $6K to $7K lowball offer on trade. A lot of it I chalk up to greed. Exactly. Why would you make and stock a part if it's not supposed to go bad?

It's not just the TCMs on a 10 year old truck though. My mechanic had a heck of a time finding a new VLOM (valve lifter oil module, I think) for my 7 year old truck. Took him a month to track one down.

Yep, if they sell 100,000 trucks a year using that specific part and need 50 replacements per year, they probably aren't going stockpile thousands of them.

With difficulty getting parts for the new trucks that really generate profits, they are unlikely to push to get parts for a 10yr old truck back into production.

Well my post disappeared like the tweakers who stole another 8D battery off my Jobsite last night.
Thereโ€™s a whole new slew of issues that will continue to affect what weโ€™ve considered a normal way of life for as long as any of us have been alive. Even the old goats.

Back to the EV battery thread and my comment there.
I sure like my wifeโ€™s โ€œnewโ€ car. 7 years old but whoโ€™s countingโ€ฆ But it still has many parts that are in current models and would be subject to the same supply chain issues.

Sure would s uck to be financially impacted by not having a vehicle because I paid big bucks for a new warranty and new car. Instead Iโ€™m comfortable that with the fleet we have and my ability to NOT rely on car dealers will ultimately save me money and unless it gets a lot worse, not be nearly as impacted financially by the current state of supply chains.

On a professional level, just using 2 small projects as examples. Total contract values combined under $30million, I and the company I work for are facing over $3 million in losses due to schedule, supply chain escalation and lawsuits against us due to govt mandated impacts to the projects.
That immediately wipes out ALL the profit margin plus some, just due to those issues. Not counting the โ€œnormalโ€ risks pre Covid.

I bet one of the 12 would part with the part if you offered to pay an extra $1000.00 to them as a "market adjustment" above the list price. Dealers are all about market adjustments now days lol.

It really sucks when "parts that are not supposed to go bad" go bad. I'm not sure where you even came up with the not supposed to go bad gem.
