15 pax van for towing?

Currently I own a '99 Dodge w/Cummins to tow my 25' Wildwood (4-season), but due to the number of persons now camping I need a bigger tow vehicle and was thinking about purchasing a used 15 passenger van either Chevy or Ford. If you tow or have towed I would appreciate info/suggestions.

Thanks,

  • after towing with my '97' e-350 15 pass. i dont even wont to think of towing with any thing else. with the v-10 and a 10000 lb. equel-i-zer set up right it tow better then any thing else i have ever owned!!!!!!!!!!!! check my sig.
  • I have the long ford van , 1999 , not a 15 passanger , but the same size work truck , I pull a 14 ft equip trailer weighs 8000 lbs , 5.4 triton , no wd hitch pulls just fine , havent done mountains with it have done some good long hills and it pulled fine .
  • 1ton vans make great tow vehicles. The van does a terrific job with the V-10. I have a Reese dual cam set up and I have no problems while towing. Proper set up of the WDH and anti sway is a must for a good ride.
  • One ton vans make great tow vehicles. Yes, the ford 15 passenger models have a longer overhang, not sure its really anymore than a long bed pick-up would have. I have an E350 in the standard length. They are cheap and everyone has plenty of room. Only thing I miss is a truck bed for dirty items. Another member on here tows with the 15 passenger version and likes it. I'm sure he will comment. The standard length version is avaiable to seat up to 12, meaning that 8 people could ride without having anyone in the center of a seat. You will miss your diesel fuel economy but the V10 has more than enough power for a 25' trailer.
  • Those 15 passenger vans have had a lot of safety (control)issues. I can't imagine that things would get better with a trailer attached. One ride in the very back seat of one should tell you all that you need to know.
  • Never heard anyone that tows with a 1-ton van complain about it. The tow ratings and receivers are quite a bit lower than the pickups, though. What years of vans are you interested in?
  • Big issue with those is the rear overhang that some of these monsters have. That makes a really big lever to 1) take weight off your front tires and 2) push you side to side. I believe the new GMs use a longer wheelbase as opposed to the fords that extend the rear.

Also, make sure you have enough GVW for passengers, any luggage, and tongue weight.

    Good luck!
