1972 Tiltin Hiltin

Just got a 1972 Tiltin Hiltin manufactured by Boswell Industries. Anyone have any info they can share about this camper. It had or has roof leaks and some of the ceiling has rotted. Just wondering if it is worth a rebuild. I have the tools and knowhow. Just wondering if it is worth it. Thanks for any replies.
  • Thanks for the replies. Been busy with work so not a lot of time to work on the T/C. So far only the ceiling seems to need replacing. I am going to attempt to get it road ready. It is not a fix and sell deal.
  • A lot would depend on the basic structure. When I rebuilt my Avion, I knew it would last a long time after the rebuild. If it has been a rotted wood structure, I would have never attempted it.
  • Your camper brings back memories of when I first was looking for a truck camper, I saw some Tiltin Hiltin campers at a dealer a few miles from where I live. A friend had one, but I never checked his out.

  • I have rebuilt/repaired several TCs through the years. I don't think there is a clear answer as to if it is worth it. It always was to me, but it really depends on your values. I think it could be worth it if you have a TC you especially like, with acceptable appliances, and use everyday building material. I question it being worth it if the intent is to buy an old TC and rebuild it with the intent to sell and make money. It can be a fun project, but can get in your pocket pretty fast.

The fridge repair/replace can cost $600 to $1600, Water heater $300 to $600, furnace, $100 just for the fan motor, water pump $100 to $150. I think the fridge coil is the most likely to be bad or go bad. If hydraulic jacks, about $40 per each rebuild kit.

I have a 1988 molded fiberglass Bigfoot TC. I bought it in 2004, and within the first four years, replaced or repaired the fridge coils, water heater, furnace fan, and jacks. Being an old TC, it lacked most of the modern day stuff; AGM battery, charger, solar, A/C, Generator, Stable Lift jack system, and a long list of comfort stuff. I paid $1000 for the TC, and spent about another $9000 on improvements. This was over a period of about three years, with no labor cost. I could not replace it today (9 years later) equipped as it is for the same $10,000. I think it was worth it.

    Uh-oh...

I thought I edited this post and put up a pic of the Tiltin Hilton yesterday. Wonder if I plugged it into the wrong thread...search party underway!
