2006 Ram 5.9 Transfer plumbing etc???

Good morning consultants. I am going with a tank out of a 550 Massey Combine. (65 gal)! Now I am trying to decide how to "transfer" the fuel. I was about to order the Northern Tool "Gravivity Flow Control Valve" but read some reviews and if there are any complaints it is that it is very slow on account of the 3/8 conections.
We do drive in winter around here!!

So am thinking to go with a electric fuel pump although I am concerned with having to remember to shut it off!!

Also I was thinking that I would "tee" my feeding line into the vent line that runs parellel to the filler tube.(2006 Ram 5.9).

I do know a guy who just "teed" it in there and plugged the vent on his fuel cap. He must have lenghened the vent hose on his tank then too.

Thoughts??
  • I added a 50 gallon tank ($100 on craigslist) to my '05 Dodge Diesel, the tank came with an internal fuel pump, with a 1 gal/minute flow. As mentioned prior, mine was plumbed into the filler tube of the main tank, however the tube was a non metallic material, could not weld, so I cut some rubber hose out of the filler tube, inserted a piece of thinwall pipe, with threaded ports welded on to accept the feed and the overflow from the new tank. I hook up a motorcycle battery thru a switch when I make pit stops, throw the switch and transfer fuel. After awhile and back on the road (with switch off), I began to notice the fuel gauge increasing...after my first concerns about screwing up the computer, and further experimenting, I concluded that somehow a syphon/suction effect had been established....so even with the fuel pump switched off, I continued to draw fuel from the Aux tank while going down the road. Once the dashboard fuel gauge begins to drop, I know my aux tank is empty, and I have 38 gallons of fuel left with which to find the cheapest fuel stop. Works for me.

  • Did it have the non taxed red dyed fuel in it, You may want to flush it really good before use.
  • I like to know my fuel mileage when towing long distance, so I put a Tuthill 13gpm transfer pump with a regular fillup nozzel on mine. I have a digital meter on the hose to measure the amount being pumped into the truck.

Since I use this setup to keep a generator, tractor and RTV filled, the transfer pump was my best option.
  • Well my combine tank is fastened down and the plumbing done. I teed it in to the vent line. I spotted something while under the truck. At the top rear of the stock tank a 1/4 inch hose is hanging open ended about 4 inches over the top edge. I would guess that this is attached to the top of the tank. What is this? A vent with just an open ended hose!!??
  • I added a 75 gallon tank to one of our ranch trucks and just Teed into the main fill pipe with the 3/8" line and flowback valve at the end. Never had a problem and the main tank always stayed full. Did this, as we could buy cheaper fuel for the ranch than intown, so on long trips it was to our advantage.
  • Here is a thread on this over on the CumminsForum.

I noticed that the link I had for the electronic valve (STONR) has expired. Do an internet search for fsv1z selector valve. This is the exact model we used (purchased from Advanced Auto Parts). Also used a cheap inline filter to catch any heavys out of the aux tank. We also did a cheap inline high volume fuel pump to help the speed of transfer. Gravity feed only took forever.

We just added a toggle switch. After a couple of overfills :S we added an LED light to help remind dad that the transfer pump was on and was adding fuel to the main tank.
  • My method is T ing it into the filler tube. On the one I currently have I pulled the filler tube and had the nipple wended on.

My 3/8 gravity always fed faster than the thirsty beast drank.
