Hey guys, Just spoke with my mom today, been a crazy week, we are all prepping for The hurricane coming. Anyway her 2011 Dodge had a noise and I checked it out a few months ago when we were all camping together. It would come and go and she said it sounded like a whistle, I first thought that it was a turbo hose since they lost power as well but I found no issues with those. Anyway fast forward till yesterday and the truck had major loss of power and check engine light. She took it to dodge and they told her today that it needs a new turbo at 4g! Wow! That's a lot of cash to shell out. Truck is stock with about 150k and taken care off. Does this sound normal? She won't have anything done till next week since the storm is coming in this weekend. But I wanted to know if you guys had this problem before, and is a turbo for that truck plus installation normal to cost 4g? Thanks!

Turbos wear out. 150k isnt bad IMO. Should have gone to Dodge with whistle? Shade tree mechanics and "it may be" diagnostics are long gone. Sorry

yes they are taking advantage of her, you should be able to get it done and a new turbo for 2k max, a good turbo will cost $1,000-1,500 at any diesel performance shop and they are very easy to change shouldn't cost over 500.00.

There are quality reman turbos for <$2,000, some with a 2 year warranty. Might be worth checking out. Stay away from Cardone, though.

I have two friends who have lost turbos on Cummins engines.The 4K may be correct. Both of my friends had to replace the injectors and inter coolers as a result of the turbo failure.

you can get a reman HE351 for her truck from diesel power products for $1,250.00

A friend of mine runs a diesel performance shop in ID, called " the hungry diesel" I have known him for many years and in the performance world a very reputable man, tell him what year your truck is and he can get you a turbo for less than any price I have heard of.

get the turbo and let your friend install it.

A few years ago the Turbo on our 2003 5.9 died while we were on an out of state trip so we were forced to have it fixed at a Dodge Dealer. While I can't recall the total price it was north of $3,000.

The 6.7L CTD uses a Variable Geometry Turbo.......vanes that move creating back pressure/exhaust braking

The actuator is usually ok, its the nozzle ring in the turbo that starts to bind. The servo motor isn't that strong, so any galling or buildup on the sliding surfaces of the nozzle ring will cause it to hang.

Does your MOM even turn EB ON??
If not routinely used it binds up due to sooting.

YEP, start truck turn on EB and TH. Wash rinse and repeat!!!

Sorry that they are having trouble with the truck. No, I don't think it is a common problem.

Dealer will charge more than an independent shop. Another option to look at is the local Cummins (not Dodge) dealer. When I had an exhaust brake put on my 03, the Cummins dealer was close to half the price Dodge wanted to charge me, for the exact same parts.

Update, thanks for the quick replies. I spoke with her this am, yes they cool the turbo down prior shutting off. They are getting the truck from the dealership and having a mechanic they know do the work. I did check the turbo in June when the problem first occurred. There was no play in it that I could feel. It didn't appear at that time to be coked either, but the lighting was not the best at that time. They got an aftermarket turbo around 2800 she said and a few hundred to install. I could have most likely done it myself but I will be busy the next weeks or so. I told u guys wrong it's a 2008 not an 2011, they purchased it at that time. Got 150k on it and maintained. I thought it was weird also about it going out as well. The turbo though did not break apart and the truck still drives. Thanks a lot for the replies, I'm passing all the info along to her.

Good luck with that Hurricane!

Dunno where you are in Florida, but I had a hard time finding a reasonable RAM dealer when in S. Florida last winter.

Eventually went to LaBelle RAM, and they were better. South Central Florida, agricultural area away from the coast. Dunno about their diesel expertise though.

Just had my turbo changed on my 2011. Electrical problems. One time that extended warranty pays off. Service writer at dealer said it was a $3000.00 plus job

^This. And if it took out injector tips, there's enough turbo parts in the motor the whole thing is pretty much only good for a boat anchor.

Agree, should be less than $2k for a new turbo, installed.
Have a hard time spending 3k even if you pick the most expensive aftermarket turbo.
