I'm thinking about getting a new leftover 2013 Ram 3500 DRW 6.7 but I was reading on the TDR about some of the trucks having short oil change intervals. One poster had to change oil 4 times in 10,000 miles because of 5% fuel dilution and the truck told him that he needed to change. Is anybody with a 13 having this problem or have you heard of anybody that has and how wide spread is it? I sure don't want to get a new truck that needs and oil change that often.Also what kind of mileage are you folks seeing on the trucks, empty and loaded?Thanks

I would not want a non DEF 6.7, 2007.5-2012! For that and poor mileage. Regen used all 6 injectors to clean exhaust trap to often, dumping lots of fuel in the cylinders. Chris

You might try going over to the Cumminsforum for better information. I haven't heard of any 2013 DEF engines with fuel dilution. Actually the Ram ad's suggest they will go 15k miles between oil changes.

Thanks guys for keeping me straight. I went back and checked again and I made a mistake it was a MY 2012. That makes me feel better.

My 12 has had less than 1% fuel dilution each time I have had Blackstone test the oil. I do drive it like it was intended to be driven. No short trips along with towing. Oil changes have been near 7,500 miles this last time just over 6K but no towing.The 13's and newer will not fuel dilution problems at all since the exhaust treatment is down stream of the engine.

The 13's can put fuel into the exhaust still, so fuel dilution can happen. However what Cummins did was that they tuned the motor to produce less particulate matter in the first place. So DPF plugging is a slower process on a new motor and all NOx treatment is handled downstream (EGR is only used to reduce PM production, no longer needed for NOx control). So the newer trucks are intended to regen mostly in a passive manner. As long as you get a few good long trips in every month or so and keep the short-trips to a minimum, you should rarely notice an active regen. I've only witnessed 3 active regenerations in the 3,000 miles I've owned it. My fuel mileage still remains fairly high as well.

You actually have to "figure" or get lucky to see when re-gen happens...you know it does, but with this 13', I've yet to tell a difference, it was more of like in my last post with the 10 and the 13'....exhust pipe got much hotter and you could tell it was hot....

I've never gotten the regen message in any of my trucks telling me the DPF was "X" % full and to drive at highway speed.....could still happen, but with 7100 miles on the truck and had it since May, haven't noticed a re-gen, though I know it's had them....

NC Hauler, agree with you on the percent full message, mine does the same. I have the 2013. It just sends me the message and I keep on driving till it's done. I've never experienced the loss of mileage though or hotter out and sniffed for fumes lol!

.....me too, a tad to cool to mow the yard, got on here and saw this about a 13' Ram, happens to be what I've owned since May 9th and with 7100 miles on it, felt I might be able to contribute some, or not stay bored:)

How does that work? If fuel is being injected into the exhaust how is it finding its way back into the engine? I though some(maybe the 6.4 Fords) would dump some extra fuel into the cylinders to help with the regen process and over time some would find its way past the rings and get into the crankcase thereby diluting the oil or "making oil". 45Ricochet posted a pretty decent link. However, maybe I should have been more clear and note that they do post-combustion fuel injection just like the Ford 6.4 and 6.7 motors do. However, the 2013+ Cummins setups are designed to have more "Passive" events than active events. So as long as you tend to have a roadtrip every couple of weeks, you'll hardly ever witness an active regeneration.

It appears you have the same truck as I do, at least that's what I saw on your profile.

Not true on a Ram truck, ..the ONLY way one get's a message about truck being in REGEN, is IF the DPF is a certain percentage full, ie 70% and up, and message will let you know that you need to drive at highway speed for a certain time, or as you drive, the percentage drops until regen is done. I've NEVER seen this message on any truck I've owned with DPF, and that goes back to an 07.5 Chevy, a 2010 Ram, a 2012 Ram and now the truck in my sig.

You WILL NOT get a regen message at any time, unless, again, the DPF is "mostly full".

I can only tell when I'm in regen if I have the gage to "instant mpg" on...THEN, you will see a drop in mpg....I've not smelled diesel fuel when truck is in regen, in the last 3 years, but you can "smell" , when you get out of the truck, a heated something kind of smell...but not diesel....At least that's been my experience with DPF equipped trucks since 2010, and DEF equipped since May...
