I am looking for a small camper, Under 3500 lbs. The pathfinder is rated at 5000lb with a tongue limit of 500lbs. I am concerned about getting to close to the hitch weight limit. It seems that the single axle campers have a low total weight but a high hitch weight. Once I add weight distribution hardware the weight on the tongue gets even higher? I have found a few campers with two axles that weight more, around 4000, but have less hitch weight, under 350 lbs. My question is would you go with the lower trailer weight, but higher hitch weight or pull a heaver trailer with a lighter hitch weight?

You will be ok with either when setup properly as far as towing goes. Which trailer do you want for your purposes and budget should be the relevant question....

Ford Explorer or Chrysler 300C to tow with.
Tracer Air 238 to be towed.
Triumph Thunderbird Sport - with the toy-hauler gone it's at home.
Retired very early and loving it.
