I have a buddy that has a 2014 Ram 1500, crew cab with the Hemi, 6.5' bed, 4x4, Laramie Limited, with the Ram box, air suspension, leather, sunroof, etc. His trucks payload was just over 1000#, like 1065# IIRC. Another friend also has a 2014 Ram 1500 Crew cab, Laramie, 4x4, 6.5' bed, but no air suspension and no ram box. His payload is just under 1300#.
Ram 1500s do have low payload, but it really depends on how they are equipped.
In the Recent Pickuptrucks.com test, their EcoDiesel crew cab 4x4 payload was 14xx#, same as the Ford with the same cab style and Aluminium body. They really aren't all that different in the real world.
The new king of payload in the 1500 series class is actually the GM twins. Almost any way you equip them, they have more payload than Ford or Ram.
