If you have a L5P Duramax Don’t let them do the update for regens, mine used to to 4 to 6 hundred miles between regens, after the recall now 2 to 3 hundard miles

As mentioned above, no factory gauge indication will "tell" you it's in regen.
When on a trip, the avg MPG will tank by about 2 mpg during regen. That's another way to tell.
I have an Edge Insight CTS2. I have it set to display when the truck is in regen.

If I pull up to a stop light while mine is in regen, I can tell it's in regen based on the slightly different sound as well as higher RPM.
My truck will regen consistently once per tank of fuel, though it's not an L5P. Mine is an LMM
