3.0 Duramax concerns ?

As I had mentioned on an earlier post, I'm decided on ordering a new Silverado 1500 and I'm pretty sure I'll get the 3.0 Duramax. It's rated to tow 12,900 lbs with 20s or 11,700 with 18s. since my next trailer will be around 7,000 lbs, I'll stick with the 18s, But my question here for my friends is, Has anyone herd of any reasons to shy away from the little Duramax? The oil pump belt is a non issue in my book. I herd some early ones had a long crank but I think it's looking pretty good.
Thank you all!

My buddy has one and loves it. He claims 30mpg solo and 20 towing a 27 foot TT. The thing is super quiet. If I remember correctly the thing puts out more power than the first V8 Duramax. The only thing I don't like about it is the price.

The LB7 was like 325 hp and 520 torque, but still it specs pretty well. The price I think is cheaper than I thought it would be for the motor. When rumors of this motor were coming out, I really expected it to a 5K upgrade to buy in. Initially it was like to 2K above the 5.3 and then they reduced the price recently again. I have to believe that they are likely subsidizing this motor or pricing very close to cost in hopes of selling a lot of them to make it pay. I think GM and Ford, unlike Nissan when they released their diesel 1500 for a short time, found the sweet spot in power/capacity and economy. You need enough power to do half-ton type things, but you have to get high mpg to make it all worth it. I think both did a great job in doing that.

Personally have never heard any bad. They did start right with a simply torque machine design straight 6.

    Yup...460 lb-ft @ 1,500 rpm = towing machine.

I know a couple of guys that have them. The only issue I have heard is they think that it uses more DEF than they would have thought they would. Everyone loves the nontowing MPG though.

I have a Ram 2500 with a 6.7 Cummins. It just sips DEF when being driven by itself but when towing I'll use a jug of DEF about every 650 miles. Hook a boxy RV or car trailer behind any modern diesel and the fuel and DEF consumption will definitely increase.
  • I don't have a 3.0 Duramax, but have a 3.0 EcoDiesel. I am a huge fan of the 3.0 diesels. If I were buying a 1500 truck today, it would absolutely have one of the 3.0's.

  • Our son has had a GMC for about a year now. Tows a 24 ft Lance TT. No problems at all.
