Anyone Excited about the 3.0 Duramax?

I’m not sure why, but this motor/truck combo fascinates me. If they can put down decent power specs and keep the NHT around 2,000 lbs of payload they could have a real winner.

Not too excited here in PA.......with regular unleaded @ $2.89 and diesel a full $.0.60 per gallon more @ $3.49 what would be the point? It might break even after around 100K miles....might not..........So the idea that its for the "fuel mileage crowd" to brag about may not fit the bill, at least here in PA. Its still going to be a 1500 truck no matter what engine you put in it. If I was looking for a GM 1/2 ton I would go with the 6.2 gasser, if I was looking for fuel mileage I'd buy a Kia, Hyoki, Honda Fit, or a Ford Fiesta lol.

Even though I won't be able to own one, I'm excited to see the truck on tfl soon. Currently I need an HD, so a 1/2 ton wont work. However for all those pulling with 1/2 ton trucks, it's great to see more options. I like the idea for sure and think that it will be a great truck.

I've read somewhere GM promised segment leading power numbers. Let's just hope they don't build it with a timing belt like Ford did. I'm sure Ford has done their durability testing but it just seems like a pricey maintenance item.

With an inline engine it's pretty easy to go all gears even.
Is this a new engine or something they pulled out of Isuzu?

I don’t think the technical specs have been released. Some speculate that it will be based off of the current 4cy Duramax in the Colorado with two additional cylinders and smaller bores.

But until the technical specs are released we really won’t know.

Nope Jerem, but it will provide hours of complaining for the geezernet.com members. They’ve already beat the EcoD, Titan and new Ford into a pulp!

I personally think they’re great for the 1/2 ton crowd. I put a lot of miles on 10-14mpg 1/2 tons and when I picked up a 6.5TD GMC back in the day, thought I died and went to heaven when I was knocking down 19mpg on road trips.
The new baby diesels get significantly better than that.

My neighbor just bought a Colorado with the little Duramax in it. Had a GMC 1500 before. They like it so far, but he did say even when towing his little Jayco Hummingbird travel trailer, you could "feel the trailer" back there, whereas with the 1500 he could not. That's probably more a truck size issue then what's powering the truck though. But, they don't tow that often and he works from home, so it's a perfect truck for them. I think a slightly larger one would be a nice addition to their 1/2 ton trucks.

Sometimes I wonder how anyone 20-30 years ago could tow anything. My first truck was a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500. It had 245HP from a 5.9L V8. I can't remember the torque but it pulled my 6000lb boat just fine. Now these baby diesels have about the same HP (230-245HP) with more torque and they are junk and can't pull anything! :). My neighbor used to have an early 80's Dodge pickup with a slant 6 2bbl carb. Used to pull about a 25' TT. Probably didn't win any races but he never had any issues. Even towed in the Smokeys for a long summer vacation with the trailer.

Sorry, didn't mean to go off topic. I am also interested to see how this 3.0 Duramax does.
