59 1/2" too tall? Need advice NOW Please !

Getting ready to buy a Ram 3500 to pull my new Fiver. I see where the thing sits 59 1/2" high, and figure the Fiver sits at 64... it's a new one BTW.

Need advice from others that have Ram's and tow as to their height concerns.

Extra BTW: I see F350 Super Duty's sit at 56 or 57.

Gotta make a decision soon.

Help

Thx. Guess I'm just a worrier.

New RV with new RAM. All be be well. There is a lot of travel before the springs get stiff.

No go pull the trigger and enjoy the ride.
  • I have the same side panel height - 59.5" (unloaded). I'm pulling just a little nose high (approx 2"), and have a clearance of 5.5" between the top of the side and bottom of the fiver overhang. I could drop it a hole in the hitch to make the trailer level, but then would have less clearance. I wish I had a little more clearance, but haven't had a problem with 5.5".

By-the-way - the amount the truck "squats" DOES NOT change the clearance. Only the hitch height will do that. A heavier trailer will be the same as a light one given the same pin box height. It WILL change the clearance just a little in the trailing edge of the side IF the truck isn't level, but very little.
  • I have about 550 pounds on my truck (hitch & gen) and half a tank of fuel. It measures about 57 or 57 1/2 at the rail and 56 to 56 1/2 at the plate of my Pull rite 18,000 with the optional short feet.
  • I had the same concerns when going from a 08 Ram 3500 SRW to a 14 Ram 3500 SRW. I found that by raising my pinbox by only 1 row everything worked perfect. I have included a picture of my setup.

    Our 2001 Ram 4X4 sits at between 58" and 59", I don't see a problem.
  • My bed rail height is also around 59 inches. I believe this is the standard with today's HD line.
I have about 8" clearance and my fiver sits level.
  • my 3500 srw is 59.5 at the bedrails. If your fiver is 64 and it has enough pin weight, you should be able to adjust the pin box and hitch to get enough clearance...you might be a little nose high, but lots of folks are making it work....it is the lighter pin weights and or older fiver that might give you more issues. I am getting ready to order an XLR toy hauler and have been researching the same
  • The truck should squat at least 2" so you should be just fine. My 5er runs a little bit nose high on my 3500 but it's all good.
