Alaska Canoe and Camp

Haven't been out in the truck camper since our Drive to Alaska. Been spending the past seven weeks watching humpbacks, hiking, fishing, and generally just enjoying being here. Got out the last couple days for a quick trip in the truck camper, and really missed it. Planning a Prince of Wales trip in a few weeks. Hard part about SE AK, is every trip requires at least a 3 hour boat ride to get to another island, none of which are cheap.

Took the ferry over to Gravina Island in hopes of camping and paddling, but we couldn't find any easy way to get to the water without a full on thrash through the rain forest, with a canoe. Seems kinda odd, considering Gravina Island is...........an island. But the rain forest here is so horrifically difficult to get through on your own, let alone dragging a canoe, that we opted to head back to our island (Revillagigedo) and head out to a campground at Settler's Cove.

Short ferry ride to Gravina Island and Sarah Palin's road to nowhere.

Onto logging roads, heading west.

Ketchikan in the background, and the Tongass Narrows hidden behind the trees.

Lots of "pin striping", and why I like my old truck and camper.

Back on Revillagigedo Island out at Settler's Cove.

View from camp.

Evening paddle in Clover Passage.

Misty morning, but glass ocean.

It's not so hard to crack, as it is expensive. A trip to Prince of Wales and back via the ferry, for a family of three and a 20' rig is $490 round trip. A trip to Metlakatla is $200. There's stuff to do here in a TC, just not much of a road system outside of POW island and you really need four days minimum to go beyond POW. To get to Petersburg or Wrangell, five days is minimum, then you are coming back on the red eye ferry trip.

The other "hard part" is the weather. SE AK gets up to 14 feet of rain per year, so inclement weather has to be expected. We have all the right gear, but still, it's harder when it's perpetually raining compared to the lower 48.

We are here through November, then might be going somewhere with even less roads, out in the middle of nowhere...........

jefe, guess us dually folks got lucky with factory mud deflecting technology. LOL! I've seen a lot of rotten wing posts and hope that such deflecting means a much longer life for the wings.

Nice pix and captions. SE AK is a tough nut to crack if you are in a TC. So much so that we avoided it entirely on our 9K mile AK foray in 2003. We purposely took as many remote dirt and gravel roads as we could driving about 2500 miles on gravel and dirt.
Gravel pit camping, 2003, somewhere along the road to McCarthy, AK:

and this was in June, the so-called 'dry season' in AK. This photo convinced me to fender up when we returned home. Why? A wood framed camper. Look at how much sludge is on the rear wings. Compare with the latest mud deflecting technology:

'Revillagigedo Island'-- that's quite a mouthful. Glad you're enjoying that part of Alaska.
