auxiliary fuel tank

We are at Quartzsite az. on the way down here fuel in Blackwell ok 3.55 san Antonio, tx. 3.49 & 3.47 at QT between here & phoenix. Most of the time fuel ran 3.69+ up to a little over $4.00

Thinking of getting an auxiliary fuel tank. been looking at them for years. There is a guy here at the show from lake havasu city who will custom build a 70+/- gal. tank that I can read fuel in both tanks for $1100. I have a bed cover & super glide hitch, don't think that is a bad price. I could save $350 if I were to put a gravity flow switch in cab. Think I would forget to shut it off, no {I know I would}. We full time & I am going to keep my baby a 07 DRW 3500 5.9 as long as I am on the road at least 10 more years I hope.

So sound like an ok good deal.

Just to be clear, the chore you are talking about is the refueling right? Not the one about taking the DW out for dinner?:B

Well, I guess that could be taken two ways, tragically.

7.5 miles per gallon? You need a truck like Airstreamer "I like not having to stop at a diesel station but once every four or five days while traveling every day on the road." 😉

Yep, here's how I worked my arithmetic:

The factory tanks carry 37 gallons of diesel, of which I can use about 30 before the gauge shows empty.

The auxiliary RDS tank carries 91 gallons of diesel, of which I can use about 85.

So, 30 + 85 = 115 gallons of readily obtainable diesel on board. I could squeeze out more, but why bother?

Towing, my 7.3L Ford pulling my 27-foot Jayco averages 14mpg.

Traveling leisurely as is my wont, I average about 300 miles per day with my trailer, or about seven hours' duration per day.

So, 300 miles per day divided by my 115 gallons stash @ 14mpg gives me 5.3 days' duration before I have to refill.

So, every four or five days, I refuel. Unless, of course, I find an area with really good diesel prices, where I would refuel a bit earlier than needed.

It's good to have options, and that's what the auxiliary tank gives me. It also allows me to significantly avoid one of my least-enjoyed aspects of towing a 47-foot rig, finding a place to refuel. Of course, most times I refuel when disattached while out dining for the night, which reduces the chore quite a bit too.

One of the nice things about these diesel trucks is that they DO include a real fuel filter, unlike the gas engined trucks. Mine has 2. I'm pretty confidant that they will catch any water or fuel contamination, whether it comes from the OEM tank or my aux tank. The fuel filter system does not know or care where the fuel comes from.

There is a lot to fuel system design. Just having a tank a dumping fuel into your truck is fuel transfer. The secondary tank is introducing many risks into the fuel system. I hope your OEM did a good job at designing the trucks fuel system, because it is going to have to accommodate the short comings of your new auxiliary system. By the way, no OEM system is perfect.
Your investment, your decision.

Per my signature line I have a Titan OEM replacement tank and absolutely love it. It increased my capacity from 26 gallon to 52 and doesn't take up any bed space. 26 gallons when you are towing just isn't enough.

Would I do it again? You Bet!

Same here with my 2500 MegaCab. Loved the extra range that I got with the truck. I got the Transfer Flow 56 gal replacement tank for my 3500 Quad Cab DRW, and what huge difference that made. I remember before i installed it, we would tow my toy hauler from Phoenix to the sand dunes at Glamis. I'd fill up to get there, and then top off to get back. Now I just fill up here, then drive out and back with no worries.

There is no one who currently makes a larger fuel tank for my truck but burning diesel I would love to have one. It is not a matter of saving money on diesel but in having a lot more route flexibility when I don't have to worry about where I can find a station that pumps diesel. With a gas engine I would not care about the extra range of a bigger tank.

When it is windy and either towing or hauling a full load my truck gets 10 MPG and so I have a range of about 300 miles and that is not a lot in the rural areas of the west.

Interesting. Where did you find that set up? How heavy is it empty?
