Auxiliary fuel tank

I had an auxiliary diesel fuel tank installed today. It has a manual shut off valve. I would like to have an electric solenoid valve put in the line so I could open the valve to allow the fuel to drain into the main tank when I need it. The ones I have found cannot be turned on for long enough to drain the tank because the solenoid burns out. I am looking for one that I can turn on and leave on until the tank is empty then turn it off. Any first hand experience would be appreciated.
  • "Gravity fill alone is very slow. We added a small universal inline fuel pump to help push/pull fuel into the main tank"....

On my aux tank, I have an in tank fuel pump connected to a motorcycle battery for a power source. The aux tank is plumbed into the main tank filler tube. When low in the main tank, I turn on the aux. fuel pump while stopped at a rest area, let it pump (1 gal/minute) until we are ready to get back on the road...somehow a vacuum is established and even when the pump is switched off, the aux tank continues to fill the main, then pulls directly from the aux tank 'till empty, then draws from the main tank. I love how it works.

  • I just use the manual valve, I so seldomly change it from open to close its not that big of an issue.
  • I have had one the same or similar to peg leg's, but it has only been in use for a little over two years. No problems. before i installed mine I thought it would not hurt anything to put some sealant around things like that nut on top of the solenoid.

    Switchable Fuel tank valve

This one in the link is the exact one I've used on two aux tank installs. Sold one truck but still have the other, and it is still in service after over 4yrs. Just plug the unused fuel port on the selector.

Gravity fill alone is very slow. We added a small universal inline fuel pump to help push/pull fuel into the main tank. Wired the pump to the same command wire used on the selector valve.
  • Here's the one I use. The viton seals last longer. This is a 1/2" 12v valve that's suitable for gasoline or diesel. I went through several until I found viton seals. I've had this one in for 2 1/2 yrs.
  • If I understand your posting...you want to be able to flip a switch and drain fuel to where you have plumbed it to go or you want open a valve electronically (flip of switch) to let gravity do its thing.

    Above link is good choice.

But you can't get any simpler and break proof than letting gravity work by manually turning a valve.
  • I think he is looking for a switch or valve that can be electronically opened but still allow gravity feed. I think the above would require a pump but not sure.
