I just wanted to share. Yesterday My wife and I added a new to us truck to our stable. It's a 2008 F150 SuperCrew XLT with 65k miles. Nothing fancy...just a nice basic truck. It has the 4.6l V8, 4speed auto, 8.8 rear end with 3.55 rear gears. It's a 2wd. It's replacing my old Town Car.

It will serve as a TV but only for light loads such as my utility trailer with a quad and a light weight fishing boat. Maybe a small TT/Hybrid/Pop up in the future. Way under 5,000 lbs which is the tow rating for a truck without the HD cooling that the tow package gives.

But what I really liked was that it has 1780 lbs of payload which is more than enough for our needs right now. It will be perfect for my Light duty needs.

I need to get a receiver hitch added to it and a few other little things from etrailer(7 way RV plug, receiver hitch, P3 brake controller, etc)..but overall it's exactly the vehicle we needed.

My coworker has a 2002 XL 4WD Supercab and 8' bed. He wanted a truck camper for his truck so he asked me what I thought. Anyhow, he doesn't have enough payload for what he wants. He may go up to a F250/350.

But what I found out shocked me. Those trucks back then really didn't have any more tow capacity than later midsize vehicles. I think his tow rating was 6500 lbs. with the 4.6L 2V, 4WD, and 3.55 rear end.

I believe his payload would be right around 1700 lbs. since it's a stripped, no power, model. He doesn't have a tread act, yellow sticker since it's older and a 2002.

Really nice looking crew cab! That truck looks really nice and should do good for what you intend to use it for.

I have a lot of miles behind a 2v 4.6L they're extremely durable and reliable....only my miles were in a Crown Vic!

Congrats buddy. I can't afford a truck yet, I'm in an 06 Pontiac Torrent AWD with a ton of miles. Ah the joys of divorce :)

Re the trailer wiring and brakes, I'd be surprised, since it has the plug in under the dash that it doesn't have wiring in back for a 6/7 way plug.
I had several 2000s models XL F150s work trucks and put trailer brake controllers in all of them and the under dash hookup was live. They all came with a hitch though and a plug in back as I recall.

If not, it's not the end of the world to wire in the whole setup, especially if you already have a 4 way to pull lights off of. Used to be a time when the mfgs didn't pre wire for a brake controller. Thought it was awesome the first time I didn't have to wire the whole thing!

Nice looking truck. I had the 4.6 in a '99 F150 and we towed a popup from the Redwoods, to Banff, Jasper, Yellowstone, and generally all over the northwest. Many fond memories of that truck and the 4.6 did well on fuel.

My son has a 2004 4.6 and just turned 250,000. He replaced the timing chains at 200,000. Other than that just spark plugs and oil.

My explorer has the 2V 4.6 V8 and I've become very attached to it. Mine is mated to a 5 speed auto with 3.73's, and has worked pretty hard since I bought it new. It still looks good and runs great.

Congratulations, that's a really nice looking truck! The 4.6L is a good engine and very good on fuel too.

Remember a larger camper usually follows not too long after these types of purchases! :B

Thanks everyone. I forgot how much I enjoyed having a truck. It really is a gem. I have spent some more time with it tonight and found a few little things that I need to take care of. A few burned out bulbs here and there. No biggie.

I think I'm stuck on these modular motors. This one makes my fifth. Three 4.6's, a 5.4, and a 6.8. All 2V. Lol. This one by far has the least Miles. I had all but ruled out 04-10 model Fords due to the Cam Phaser issue on the 3v (my FIL got bit hard by faulty cam phasers on his 07 Navigator.) but once I realized that the 2 valves were still available as the 4.6 we started looking for them.

Looks like I am going to have to hard wire in a brake controller and a 7 way RV plug. I can't find any quick connectors for the factory 4 way. I do have the little plug under the Dash for the brake controller. But I'll have to test it for power. I'm suspicious that it's dead since this truck didn't have the factory tow package.
