Back up camera location

I have a wireless back up camera I wish to install on the back of my 27'TT to aid in backing up so not to take out a tree or other object. My question is were is the best location to mount the camera, left or right side or in the middle?

Thanks for any input, have learned so much from this forum.
  • I have a Voyager Wireless system and it works good. Yes it does drop the signal once in a while for a second or two but it does come back quickly. I mounted it below the middle clearance light, and I can see right and left and back without a problem. The system I bought also has night vision and sound so the wife can let me know if there is a issue when backing. The system did cost me $400+, but I have used it one 3 different trailers. I do have the antenna on the front for best reception. Resolution is good and camera is detailed not fuzzy. Bought it from RV Cams.
  • Last trailer I put the camera in the back window. New trailer I put it on the roof ladder. Both were hard wired (not wireless).
  • I mounted my camera inside in the rear window of my trailer. With the monitor on the dash of my tow vehicle it makes a nice rear view mirror, in addition to my regular extended mirrors.
  • I have my IBall camera mounted on a suction cup and I attach it to the rear spare tire cover about 2 ft high
  • The thing with me and the backup camera on my truck is I am either looking at the camera or the mirrors.. I usually find I do better with the mirrors than the camera..

Okay, the camera helps a lot with hitching up the trailer, but backing into parking spots, I use the mirrors..

When backing the trailer, it's all mirrors and watching the trailer tires to tell me where I'm going and of course, knowing if there are trees around me before I start backing up in the first place.. As long as I know where they are, I know they are there.

My spotter only tells me if I'm going to hit something.. Not guide me.. I can guide myself. The spotter only tells me if I'm going to hit something.. I said that twice, because that's all my spotter does.. :)

    Good luck!

    Mitch
  • Middle below the center clearance light some I could get power ez. When going down the road I sometime don't have a clear picture, but slow or backing up it works fine.
  • My experience with 2 different wireless cameras had too weak a signal to reliably reach a monitor on the dash even when mounting the transmitter nearer the hitch in the trailer. My wired camera is just below the trailer rear center marker light aimed down so that I can see both ends of the rear bumper.

Don't be surprised if the angle of view is so fish eye you won't be able to properly judge perspective. A $100 camera also doesn't handle contrast well so you'll often find it very difficult to interpret exactly what you're seeing. I use mine now only for hitching up and for that purpose it's invaluable ... for anything else, not so much. ;)
  • Tape it temporarily to various locations to test where you get the best view.

Also, are you sure you can even get a decent signal from the back of your trailer to the monitor in the cab of your truck? I had very little luck getting a sharp picture with the wireless unit I tried on a previous trailer.
