Backup camera

Our 2105 3500 Chevy has a rear camera in the tailgate - tailgate is removed when camper is loaded … want to install an OEM backup camera that uses the same factory camera harness & pin out & use factory 8" myLink screen; installing it above the back door kinda by the center running light.

Found this option from Camera Source … has anyone bought one of these & if so, does it work?

Also looking at CubbyCam, but no 2015's listed.
  • Call cubbycam. Ed made the first BU camera for my 2015 GMC 3500 so he already has the GMC connector you need. You can choose your camera from his choices. I highly recommend cubbycam!
  • Also cubbycam will make the harness any length you need. I mounted my camera under the rear bumper of my Lance 855s and it pretty accurately replicates the same view that my OEM tailgate camera does.
  • It is simple to remove the camera from the tailgate. Currently mine is taped just under the camper door. I want to raise it and I think I will mount it permanently on the door to the sewer dump. Course you have to unhook it when you take the camper off, but unless it's wireless that will always be the case. The connection is just a plug-in right behind the bumper, leaves you with the camera and about 2-3 feet of wire. Now whether I can put it all back together in 10 years when I change trucks.... doubtful.
  • Using the OEM camera if fine if you have a relatively short camper or unless they left a lot of extra wire stuffed in the tail gate. I want to be able to use my tailgate occasionally so I opted for a separate camera/harness. Routing the wire so that it was supported but admittedly not taking the most direct route I needed a ten foot harness. Bigimac indicated that he wanted to go above his door so he will need an even longer harness. Bigimac, I noticed in your signature that you have upsized your tires one size to LT275's. Any clearance issues? I have the same truck and am planning to upsize tires soon to the LT275's also to add a little more weight carrying capacity.
  • Thx gregc, yup - locating above the door says I need 13' of cable I'm planning on calling "Ed" Monday to compare $$$ - I like the option to choose camera.

Upsizing to 275's is no problem, no rub, no wonky steering. I really like these Toyo M/S rated tires. I've driven them on soft & packed snow, ice, & kind of gnarly mud this winter - great traction & stopping. Was really impressed with how they grabbed the fairly smooth, bare rock going up a washed out creek bed down below Moab last fall - no spinning at all. No loss of mpg, pretty quiet @ 70 on highways - way better than those factory Michelin's.
