Best Tires for Towing?

What are your tire recommendations for best towing for a Silverado 3500HD.

I want quiet, but will need some tread for some winter driving.

Make and model will be great, and why you like them (or what to stay away from). Presently have Nitro Dura Grabbers that are pretty much worn out.

Thanks,

As I just mentioned in another thread, I was very happy with the Cooper A/T3's. 2 trips to the cabin in Ont, snow most of the way up 1st trip, snow on the way home the 2nd, no issues at all!

No louder than what the stock Dueler At's were, and a 55k mi warranty!

I will buy again when they make my stock size for 20" rims!

Thanks for all the replies. I went to a tire dealer today and the good news is I still have about 10,000 + miles left. Will be looking to buy in the springs.

The M55's seem to have a good recomendation here. Are they Micheline's?

Brian, nice to know I am not the only one getting double the life of M55's vs the open country. I got about 40 out of them before putting the M55s on. Best additional money I have spent on a tire! Most of the time it does not work or pay off. Michelins have ALWAYS been that way in my almost 40 yrs of buying tires.

Coopers also make good tires.

Open Country A/Ts were one of the tires I've run before. The M55s are better in every way except noise when the windows are down, and speed rating (M55s are only rated for 89 MPH, but they hold up just fine at much higher speeds for short bursts like when passing). I also get double the life out of the M55s compared to the Open Countrys.

As Marty mentioned, the open lugs are great for the heavy sloppy stuff. But also important is they don't get hard in low temps like the Open Country tires do. The M55s stay nice and pliable even sub-zero. Also they have siffer sidewalls so they are nice and stable with a trailer even with their open-lug tread.

Are you literally towing in snow and ice? THen the M55's mentioned are great tires. I have 90K on my dually. If it is just getting around int he snow, the Toyo open country are ok, then again, here in the NW, one needs more of an open tread due tot he wet snow/slush we get. Back east where the snow may be drier, then it may do ok.

I would look more towards and M55 than a toyo, altho the toyo would be the least open tread I would look for. The transforce, might as well by the HT version, just slightly more open in the middle tread and 2/32 deeper from the get go. No real difference in my book.

I don't know of ANY of the major manufacturers who make an all season tire in an LT load range that would NOT be suitable for towing. I'd look at service instead. I've had great luck with Cooper Discover LT tires, as they are quiet, have good traction and a great ride. Problem is they do not have any nationwide warranty so if you have an issue come up while traveling you pay for the replacement tire and are reimbursed by the dealer where you purchased the tire. They are not the ONLY company who present this problem. Ask about nationwide road hazard to avoid issues like this.

I just replaced the horrible OEM Goodyear wrangler tires on my 2011 Silverado 3500 (28,000 miles) and after looking around a bit settled on the new Goodyear Adventure AT, which has a 60,000 mile warranty and 2 layers of kevlar in addition to steel. Stock size.

My needs are basically towing (heavy and a lot) and plowing (a little)...and it looks like this will do both well.

They got good reviews at their "roll out" (pardon the pun) and are quiet around town, but my towing reviews will have to wait till spring.

Best of luck...Irish
