Big, Big problem with my fresh water tank!!!!

I am having problems with my water pump and had an RV mechanic look at it. Come to find out, there is a white/grease like substance in our fresh water tank that is plugging up the intake hose and has plugged the drain hose completely. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to clean it out or the Big Question, what is that substance? Has anyone ever heard of finding this mystery white/greasy goo in a fresh water tank? And do you suggest replacing the whole tank or try to some how flush that stuff out? This is a new TT for me and had only 1 previous owner. I always flush the system out every month and use filtered city water to fill it. I have drank the water from the TT and it doesn't have any strange taste or have a strange oder, and I haven't had any ill affects. Anyways, I hope someone has an answer or suggestion. Thank you in advance.
  • To my wonderful extended RV family. Thank you all for your responses. After a lot of thinking and hair pulling, I pulled my tank and cleaned the heck out of it. That was quite the chore considering my TT has a sealed underbelly and I have never done this before. My wife wants a new tank, so I called a half dozen places before I finally found a person to talk to and ordered a new tank. In the mean time I put the old one back in case the new one doesn't arrive before our trip from Virginia to Montana.

After some research, I found the original owners had well water and never treated, or emptied the tank since they had installed an aftermarket filter between the tank and pump. This is why I think the slime was growing in the tank. I have learned a lot from you all and I will be bleaching my system multiple times a year. Again, thank you all for your support, guidance, and teachings. Until the next time this newbie has questions, I will talk to ya later!
  • As mentioned above, I would add bleach, allow it to sit 24 or more hours then rinse. I would repeat the process a few times.
Then, I would fill the tank and allow it to sit for 24 hour and get the water tested. If there's anything nasty in the tank maybe the people who test the water can recommend something to eliminate the problem.
Or, just get the nasty water tested and see what it is before doing anything.
Let us know how you solve the problem and what caused the problem.
  • When you do bleach it, make sure it sits with the tank full of bleach water for at least 24 hours - otherwise it's all for show.

  • Bite the bullet and Replace. No more worrying about clean water.
  • I'd use a soap to clean it and bleach with rinse. If it's been in the tank for awhile, it's also in your water supply lines and water heater. Probably a good idea to flush them too.
  • Probably some sort of mold or slime mold. It should be possible to remove it by removing the drain valve from your trailer and flushing it thoroughly then sanitize the system after putting the drain back in the tank. Make it a HABIT of sanitizing the entire system several time a year. Sanitizing is something that MANY RVers neglect, believing that if they don't often USE the FW tank it is not necessary but even when connected to CITY water, you're using the same lines.

    Good luck / Skip
  • What ever it is, it's now growing inside you and will soon unleash on the Earth. Sounds like someone put something in that was'nt meant to be in it. I'd do the flush with Hot water and bleach, lots of bleach.
  • I would think it has to be something "growing" In the water? Try bleaching the tank and letting it sit for a day or two and flushing everything really good.
    Good luck

  • I would replace the inlet and tank, especially since you do not know what the substance is.
