Black foam insulation for the windows

Somewhere in here, within the last few months there was a thread regarding winter camping. In that thread there was mention of using a somewhat rigid black foam, cut to fit the windows.

Someone from the Tacoma, WA area bought some at a foam store in the Tacoma/Fife area... and someone else posted the name of the location... I've searched high and low and can't find that thread so I can't track down the store name.

I know there's a few people in here from the the Tacoma area... maybe they can post what the name of the store is, or the official name of that black foam.

HELP
  • I'm starting to think the admins deleted the thread. I remember very specifically a few words that were in that thread, and a search has not yielded anything.
I know that someone posted about finding the name of the place that sold the foam and mentioned it was in Tacoma or Fife.
It was one of the Tacoma area TC owners that had mentioned they had got the black foam from a place locally, then someone else found the actual business name.
  • Two types of closed cell foam used for insulation that I'm aware of are the polyethylene based variety and an elastomeric nbr/pvc variety. Both come in sheets and rolls.

IIRC Buzzcut1 found a sheet black polyethylene closed cell foam in one of the building center box stores in the Bay Area. I could never find one at any of the building centers on the peninsula when I lived there.

Online I ended up using Foam Factory when I needed some thicker pieces. If you only need small pieces of thicker foam, it can be built up from thinner material available at packaging vendors and using a hot glue gun.

Absent ordering online, a google search found the following place in Fife, WA IR Specialty Foam LLC.

They have both elastomeric and polyethylene closed cell foams. Worth a call 800.426.7944

If they are what I think they are, they do the foam production on site and then cut up 20' x 10' x 8' blocks of foam to the desired size on huge moving table band saws or hot wire rigs. Something to see ...
  • I bought a pack of 2 x 2 black foam tiles at Costco -- they are intended for garage flooring. I cut them to fit the windows. I mounted small magnets on them so that they stick to the window frames. Works great to cut down on heat loss on cold nights!
  • Actually I buy my foam from a specialty foam store in Fremont CA never at a big box. I do get my rolls of reflectix at Home Depot

WOOHOO!!! We have a winner. I seem to recall the site layout of foam factory's website, and seeing the black stuff there, and then googling the name of it.
IR Specialty foams rings a bell too.

I reckon I will bookmark this thread.

    Thanks!
