We have a winner. That was actually the problem. I couldn't tell until I put the new fitting on and then tested it with the valve attached to the hose but not on the toilet. Hairline crack on the toilet valve. Sheesh. Well it is a $29 item on Amazon, no big deal.
I did find the sharkbite fitting at my local Ace. The big Home Depot didn't have the correct size. And I learned a lot about PEX so there is that. I do like working on these campers as I learn a lot about them by pulling them apart.
