Break Away Switch Test

Our 93 Terry Resort XT1 16h had a old break away switch that didn't look to be in the best shape so we purchased a new Tekonsha break away switch. I understand that one wire goes to blue brake wire the other goes straight to TT battery. My question is: Is there any way to test the new switch short of using a multi-meter on brakes them self? I pull the pin but hear no humming from brakes. The trailer brakes do work while hooked up to TV. Im sorry if this is a newb question. Thanks for any help.

    You can do a quick check on the brake magnets on the trailer with an inexpensive hunting compass. With the power applied it should point right at the magnet when placed near the rim.

    Battery is fully charged. I was thinking I should hear a humming. Also didnt know that I could burn up my brake controller if it was hook up when the break away switch came out. Thanks again.

    As Mark says. Make sure the battery is charged, other wise it won't work.

    As Terry says, but pay attention to the part about unplugging the 7 pin from the tow vehicle. Otherwise you could fry your brake controller.

    The brakes should only hum when actuated by the controller. This because the controller pulses the power to the brakes. When you pull the breakaway switch, it applies a full 12V and it won't hum.

    is you battery good?
    What Terryallan say is a easier way to check.
    also you could jack up on side of the trailer and spin the wheels to see if they stop when the pin pulled

    Yep. Hookup to the TV. DO NOT hook up the 7 pin. pull the breakaway pin out, and try to move the TT. IF it moves. It's not working, IF the brakes are locked. It's working.
