Building my homemade truck camper (Video)

Hello, I have been working hard for the past couple weeks and have just finished by home made camper. I needed to make a custom one because of a natural gas tank in the bed of my truck. I ended up making use of my camper shell, raising it and building out the walls and inside as well as added a small cabover section.

  • Thanks for the build video - that is working out to be a nice little camper in there. Plus because you built it out of ply you can easily modify the layout as you wish.

    Cheers,

    Steve.
  • Looks like it will be just right for a adventures young Buck! Looks like you have everything you need for a great camper rig.

I wouldn't trust my life to that carbon monoxide detector though. I would only cook with the windows open and not after partying to much. Now maybe you don't party, but lots of young folks do. On second thought I would only cook outside and perhaps use the small tanks and find a way to store them outside.

I am a little on the paranoid side but that tank inside your living and sleeping space would freak me out. If you want heat for the inside I would invest in a buddy heater that is made for what you need and has a automatic low oxygen shut off. I would also have a second carbon monoxide sensor, as well as a propane sensor. A good friend of my sons lost three of his friends to CO poisoning. On a house job site I was on some years ago, one worker was also killed by CO by running a small generator in the house. That CO sneaks up on you and you become confused and don't have the sense to get out.

But I am sure you have all ready discussed this at length. Just throwing in my 2 cents.

Great Rig and I envy you on your adventurers! Just make sure you don't wake up dead or in a explosion!

  • Good job! We all start somewhere and continually improve our camping conditions.
  • keep "tuning" it as you go, you will find things you want to change. workout how to seal that back door better and your body heat alone might keep that thing warm inside. Plus you need to control the dirt (and water) that will come in the back as you drive.
keep your eyes open for some cabinet doors somewhere, save them and make them work. I built a Van interior that way when I was your age. later I built a new cabin on an old boat with my Father. It was fun times you will remember forever.
    looks good
  • I love it! You are the perfect example of a do it one dang way or the other attitude. Great storage ideas. I met a guy who did a similar build with kayak rack on top. He said he spent $350. Enjoy and keep improving on it.
  • Necessity! The mother of invention. Nice job, I'm sure it will treat you well. Enjoy. K
  • That'll give you some good use. Probably going to be a few bugs to work out. Make sure it's all secured well before you hit the highway.
  • You did a lot of hard work and I know you will enjoy it since there is so much of you in it. Thank you for sharing and I wish you the best in camping.
  • Eli your camper is terrific! Your work and ingenuity are wonderful. I might have missed it (my phone speaker is blown) but in the event they are missing, with your skills you could easily add the propane, CO2, and smoke detector safety devices. Very nice!
