Building you own? Define hybrid.

I just realized that nothing has been posted here. I'm not here to shake it up or be some kind of troll but can someone define what this thread is about? I want to spark a discussion (or can someone define) as to what is a hybrid? I'm clueless, please educate me. So as that I understand what this topic is about, is a hybrid something someone makes themselves to blend the skills and knowledge as an RV enthusiast through what they have learned owning all types of RV's? Is that legitimate? I had asked in a round about way to the higher ups at the forum, how do the people with the skills and facility come here and blend in with the RV industry to build their own RV. Sorry, but I got no reply. I hate to call it tiny homes or is it taboo to build it yourself?...Well the debate is on ...lets see what flame I can spark here...just looking for some basic answers and maybe this is a start to a good discussion. Let the games begin!!
  • Couple of things

Though you wouldn't think with all the shoddy construction stories going around which includes my own experiences, there is some level of regulatory/standers that RV's are constructed. That requires a skill level and I for one would not want to take on that kind of responsibility/liability. For me its Maintain and enjoy! :C

you get much more living space with a hybrid as sleeping is on the outside. The trade off, more outside noise because of the canvas and more maintenance on the trailer.

  • Nice feedback....thank you everyone....yeah now I remember those types of RV's. They have gone kind of to the wayside and I just went to our RV show and didn't see anything like it. Well that's why I asked and we got really good answers and place to learn here. Again thanks for the clarification!
  • Read his post. He wanted to know what "this thread" Hybrid Travel Trailers is about. He wanted to know what a hybrid was. He wanted to know how to post about building it yourself where it made sense to post. I simply answered ALL his questions and clarified the terms "thread", etc., as he had misused them in his OP.

This Hybrid Travel Trailers board is for specific questions for Hybrid trailers (as defined above for you). Many folks with hybrids will post in the main Travel Trailer board or another board that relates more to their question (like the full-timing, pets, cooking, etc.).

If you are looking for posts about building a camper trailer, then you might find some helpful info in the Do It Yourself Modifications and Upgrades board (for info on rebuilds, repairs and such that could help) or the Tech Issues board (for info on installing fridges, power converters, and so on).

There really isn't a board here specific for Do It Yourself camper builds and most folks have professionally built rigs, but there are folks here who would be able to provide assistance and such if you post on those two boards.

P.S. A "post" is an individual comment within a thread or conversation (like your initial post or this post of mine). A "thread" is a group of posts that are creating a linked conversation - so you can read the original post (OP) and all the responses as an ongoing conversation. The Hybrid Travel Trailers, and other named sections, is a category or "board" that contains a bunch of threads relating to that subject. The "forum" is the entire group of boards containing a bunch of threads that each contain one or more posts. You may not have gotten a response from the administrators because they did not understand your question.

The OP is a Senior Member and been on the Forum since 2006. I would think they should know how this Forum works by now.:h
  • Or just go to the first stickied post in the forum and look at a couple of pictures. Then you will know what one is.

  • They where pretty popular through the early to mid 2000's but have waned in popularity the last few years with ultra lite TT's and more than capable TV's to pull them. Owned a couple and really like them when the kids where small.
  • They are called Hybrid travel trailers. They are a mix of regular travel trailer and Popups. So you have a TT with canvas bed platforms.

Some RV marketing dolt, came up with the "Expandable" name, which is ridiculous. That would mean that any RV with a slideout, is an "Expandable".:S

It's not a homemade thing. They are manufactured in RV factories, under many different brands. R-Vision created the Hybrid TT and debuted them in the 1998 model year. So they've been around for over 20 years. So they aren't a new thing.

My question to the OP, it sounds like you don't have a hybrid TT. Are you asking about them because you are considering buying?
If you truly want to understand what they are, just go to a RV dealer and walk through one.
  • Its for full height campers with tent beds. A "hybrid" between travel trailers and pop-ups.

Also called an expandable. Not as popular as other trailer types, so not as much chatter.

Plus a lot of the info in the regular trail trailer forum applies to hybrids.
