This is a good way to get over that. Just take it one wire at a time.
If you have a jumper pack you can use that as a power source for your testing. Once you identify the ground wire, hook the negative from the jumper pack to that. Make up a probe which can be as simple as a nail gripped in the positive alligator clip of the jumper pack, and start poking other wires. See what lights up. Put a masking tape "flag" on each wire and mark what it does.
I had to do this with my Palomino. It wasn't that bad.
