Carolina or bust

So we are planning to head south for the winter. Been out of NY State maybe 3 times. Our plan is to go to South Carolina..Not a fan of Florida. We have a 1992 Winnie Brave that I had for 15 years with every upgrade that exists and some that dont exist..We are leaving November 1 from Albany, NY and thinking of taking couple of weeks to get to S. Carolina. Stay for a couple months in one spot then maybe move a little north weather permitting. We have a budget but are not on a shoe string.

The questions are: Where to go, what route, where to stay and etc.?

Any input would be appreciated.

  • As already mentioned, stop off in the Western part of NC and set up in a CG in or near the mountains. Awesome trout fishing. PM me for further details.
  • If you want beach, you will need reservations but check out Huntington Beach State Park just a few miles south of Myrtle Beach. Or Myrtle Beach State Park too. They are part of the 50% deal.

    SC 50% deal

Honestly. You would need to go to the coast to beat the cold weather. Would be fun to drive thru the Blue Ridge , or Smoky Mountains. but you would need to head for the coast to find warmer temps. And there are CGs that are not in Myrtle Beach. back off the ocean some, but maybe less expensive. Just as nice
  • SC and GA state parks offer a 50% discount in January and February for those that pay for a month at a time, dropping the price as low as $300 for the month. Some of the sites have full hookups which make it very nice.

If you want to boondock, there is the Francis Marion NF just north of Charleston. All you have to do is visit the Sewee Visitor Center on Hwy 17 or the main office on Steed Road to fill out a form to let them know the general area of your stay. It's deer season until Jan 1 so wouldn't stay in the forest until after then. If you want to do this, send me a pm and I can give you a couple of neat places to stay.

There's a nice State Park next to St. Mary's, GA which is just up from the FLA boarder. Decent shower house with a wash machine for clothes.

St. Mary's is nice little town, not much going on though. It's also home to one of the Navy's east coast Nuke sub bases. Nice little submarine museum in town. And take the boat out to Cumberland Is. for the day.

Funny I was going to mention that park but figured it was further south than the OP wanted to go. It is a nice place
  • Pack your fly rods and fish Smokey Mtn. Nat. Park since you will be close.

  • I would take I88 to Binghamton then Take 81 to Front Royal,VA I would then take Skyline drive and Blue Ridge Parkway to I 77. From there I would take I77 and get to Myrtle Beach for a few days/weeks.
