I like the lights that have the countdown for the cross wallk. I can see how much time is left as I approach the light. Havenโ€™t run into a 2 second yellow light, but I know theyโ€™re out there!

I do also. The problem is lately it seems like more and more are changing the lights before the countdown goes to zero/don't walk. I have had them when it hits 5 the light is changing to yellow.

We are all experts at making assumptions without all the facts! It would be interesting to have access to the LEO accident reports on this!

Okay, I gotta hear this. How does it being a Ford diesel have anything to do with the reason why the truck flipped? And how would a SRW GM or RAM would have kept it from flipping?

It doesn't. Just thought this thread might need another ridiculous comment.:)

Somebodies just got punk'd! LOL.

Glad everyone was okay and walked away! Things can be replaced.

"He made a mistake. We've all done it... light turns yellow, you hesitate while thinking what is going to move in the trailer if you hit the brakes harder than normal and you end up losing precious safe stopping time. Most of the time everything ends ok, but this time a number of factors aligned and it didn't end well. Thankfully everyone walked away."

He made several mistakes! Towing with a 5" lift, towing with questionable on many fronts tires, being severely over payload, possibly well over GVWR and/or GCVWR, along with mentioned above. Very glad they all walked away, actually surprised they did. Wonder if he received citation(s) as he should have.

This appears to be a busy intersection with all shapes and sizes of vehicles going though it. If the light is timed that terribly, there would be so many accidents something would have to change. In my opinion many accidents mean about 1 a month. If there was an accident a month due to someone not being able to clear the intersection because the yellow light didn't stay on long enough before opposing traffic turned green (even in a monkey controlled state like California) the DOT would have to address the issue. I'm guessing there isn't an accident a month there so I'm completely blaming the driver of the RV.

As long as he was paying attention to the road and saw the light change from green to yellow at "40 mph" he could have STOOD on the brakes and brought that rig to a halt. If someone a$$ packed him that would be on them. Of all the laws tossed around in this thread I'm surprised no one has pointed out the "safe traveling distance law" that if you rear end someone you are almost always at fault, especially approaching an intersection.

If you're saying you are not smart enough not to kill someone, then I guess my prayers for you are in vain. Generally big rig drivers are a pretty smart, responsible, and safe lot. Your statements depict something less. Do you really fear you'll lose the load by stopping for a red light?

I'LL match my education/smarts against most.

Over 20 yrs, couple million miles...never in a chargeable accident.

Lose a load stopping...probably not.

Lose a load under hard deceleration...could happen.

The current load I have on weighs 47,000. Eight feet tall with 14 straps holding multiple pieces to the deck. I sure hope I don't have to slam on the brakes.

I stand by my statement. Unpredictable lights, at highway speeds, scare me. That is why, if you read my original comments on the subject, I stated that I approach them slowly and cautiously.

Enjoy the upcoming camping season. Thanks for the prayers. I know that God hears them, that education I briefly mentioned is a degree in Ministry.

PA 300-1949 is rather lengthy. Google found it on the first try Michigan law traffic control device

I don't care what the manufacturer"s number say, I don't believe any of the SRW 3/4 ton trucks are up to the job for any 14k trailers.

That is my opinion.

Exactly the same in Michigan, yellow means STOP unless unsafe to do so. Michigan public act 300 of 1949

I'll concede that you are likely correct as well, but googling that term reveals this...
AN ACT to provide for the registration, titling, sale, transfer, and regulation of certain vehicles operated upon the public highways of this state or any other place open to the general public or generally accessible to motor vehicles and distressed vehicles; to provide for the licensing of dealers; to provide for the examination, licensing, and control of operators and chauffeurs; to provide for the giving of proof of financial responsibility and security by owners and operators of vehicles; to provide for the imposition, levy, and collection of specific taxes on vehicles, and the levy and collection of sales and use taxes, license fees, and permit fees; to provide for the regulation and use of streets and highways; to create certain funds; to provide penalties and sanctions for a violation of this act; to provide for civil liability of manufacturers, the manufacturers of certain devices, the manufacturers of automated technology, upfitters, owners, and operators of vehicles and service of process on residents and nonresidents; to regulate the introduction and use of certain evidence; to regulate and certify the manufacturers of certain devices; to provide for approval and certification of installers and servicers of certain devices; to provide for the levy of certain assessments; to provide for the enforcement of this act; to provide for the creation of and to prescribe the powers and duties of certain state and local agencies; to impose liability upon the state or local agencies; to provide appropriations for certain purposes; to repeal all other acts or parts of acts inconsistent with this act or contrary to this act; and to repeal certain parts of this act on a specific date.

I would be curious to read the language of Michigan's law, as I am curious what define's "unsafe" to stop. If I'm 200 feet from an intersection at 55 mph, in theory I should be able to slam on my brakes and bring my vehicle to a stop before the stop line and then sit stopped at the yellow light for an additional 5 or 6 seconds... but it seems to me that a sudden stop is more likely to cause an issue than simply continuing on and passing through the intersection while under the yellow light.
