CUMMINS HISTORY, LESSON 4: ’03-‘07 5.9LI think after reading some of these articles, many people will start to understand just how much the diesels have changed just to meet emissions. When you say diesel emissions, most people only think of EGRs, SCRs, and DPFs, but they don't think of injectors, turbos, heads pistons and so on. All of these were altered to meet emissions. This is why I say that even a deleted diesel is cleaner than a pre-2003 truck.
It is also why I say adding power(to an extent) with a tune or delete does not necessarily reduce reliability like many say. The stock map is made to keep emissions in check(above all else) even at the detriment of the engine's longevity. By removing things such is pilot and post injection, you reduce the amount of injection events thus reducing injector wear. This also keeps the engine cooler since post injection was designed to increase in-cylinder temps to fully burn off soot. There are many other things that make the engine more reliable with a tune versus the stock tune.
