Cummins Water Pump

Finally. I got a call from my service advisor letting me know they actually have the new style pump and set me up for tomorrow. I haven’t heard anything from FCA though. I absolutely love my truck, but slightly less than thrilled with FCA and how this recall has been handled and drug out. I received my initial recall notice end of September and here it is mid March. I hope to never need them again.

"If you just pull the pump off all the fluid to the level of the bottom of the pump boss/opening on the block will be lost, including fluid in the rad down to that level. So most of it!"

True DAT!!!

My pump was not in Monday so I am to call back next Monday.

Don't be too surprised if you need to add 1/2 - 3/4 gallon of antifreeze after the fact too. Depending on your dealership/technician, they may not top off the overfill tank. From what I understand, FCA expects the tech.'s to re-use the coolant that spills out when the old pump is removed.

My dealer replaced my water pump on 3/19. When I picked it up I asked the service adviser if the coolant was only drained enough for replacement or complete drain and refill. He told me they always do a complete drain, including warming up to let the Thermostat open so that all coolant drains out, then a complete refill of fresh MOPAR grape juice. Also, the overflow tank is full right up to the correct line.

That's great that your Dealer is doing that. But my question is; how much coolant is lost when you take the pump off? It looks like the pump is just an impeller with a pulley and very little fluid would come out when you take the pump out. On the other hand, you might lose significant fluid with gravity pushing it out from the radiator fluid level above.
Just curious.

Yes you have to drain the coolant as gravity will drain the coolant out of the block.

I think that is the biggest reason for the recall and not a TSB. I think the fires have been rare but still a possibility.

NOTHING happens to the engine. The "pump" gets **** HOT but still circulates water.

There is always that pesky fire to could damage the engine.

Nothing happened to the engine when mine went but if I kept going it would have overheated and killed it.

Worst case is an engine fire, which have occurred. Yes many have failed.

The other issue here is this is a Cummins supplied part and if they use this pump on other engines (I'm sure they do) this is why there is a shortage of parts. Bottom line is like Troy said, parts are made as needed and shipped as needed so now they (the pump supplier) are going to have to work overtime to not only supply the parts needed for production but also for the recalls. Since this was a different supplier the other supplier (OMP) is going to have to be paid for this cost by Cummins and Cummins in turn will collect from the supplier that caused the recall (Concentric).

Supplier issues is why Ford dropped IH and went in house for their diesel engines. Not that it means there won't or can't be issues, but it is easier to identify and react to issues when found. Parts that are built in house are easier to obtain also. Outside supplier parts not so much. Too many layers to deal with before you can get parts coming. Think finger pointing here.
