Def Fluid LIfe

Hi all,
My 2013 Duramax has been sitting in my garage since last Oct. Should I be worried about the DEF fluid degrading and possibly causing problems when I hit the road this month? Couldn't find much info about it thus far. They say the shelf life is 2 years but not sure if that applies after it's put in the truck. I've been using Blue Def from Walmart. I think the garage temp briefly got below 30 as the lowest temp.

Hard to believe. The seals I have removed, would have been difficult to impossible to reinstall so they would pass "inspection"

And vehicles that use DEF are pretty expensive... Hard to believe that someone with such an expensive ride would bother trying this for such a small amount of money.

I did a search and found one member reporting a rumor (stated so) of Wal mart DEF being returned with water and resold... No reports of seal tampering... Sounds like a rumor that as usually happens, grows over time.

Where did you get your info?

I agree.

Been buying Blue DEF at Walmart since I bought my truck. No issues.

In addition to the cap seal, the jug is inside a cardboard box. You pretty much destroy the box to get the plastic jug out. Are you telling me the thieves glue the box back together too ?

Not saying it has never been done. W-Mart is a volume place and I'm sure their Loss Prevention folks have great stories. But has it happened more then once ? Sounds like an urban legend.

Yesterday is was amphetamines, today they tried DEF, who knows? Tomorrow they may try Crest Toothpaste! (I'm just guessing here.)

Didn't take very many chemistry classes correct....:B
Is it time for your medication or mine?

Pilot/Flying J's have it in bulk at semi fuel pumps. Here in Syracuse, I think it was around $3/gallon at Pilot. Can fill the pick up here, but not the VW. Have to fill jug up at pump, pour into another bottle and then into VW's tank. Bit of a pain, but far cheaper than VW dealer.

The last DEF I bought at WM was 8-9.00 for 2.5 gallons. Considering the LOW consumption rate our TVs have, the money saved by buying at a bulk station isn't much.

Our DEF systems are designed to quit if there is something wrong with the DEF. This will result in the TV going into limp mode at a minimum. Then a trip to the dealer, and possibly some very expensive repairs.. There is no drain in the DEF tanks. It has to be removed to dispose of bad DEF.

There are many things that can do wrong in a bulk purchase.
I prefer to use the sealed jugs that have production/dste codes.

IMO, the risk reward ratio is just not favorable enough for buying in bulk.

Very good point, thanks!

FYI Watch the DEF when you buy it at WalMart. There have been numerous cases where members have bought there only to find nothing but water in the jug. With Walmarts no questions asked return policy it seems some low life's are buying it, dumping it in their truck, refilling the jug with water and the returning it for a refund.

Thanks for the info on the different brands of DEF all being the same. And yes, just like medicines, if the box is opened, or the seals broken or even look a bit funny, I don't get them or use them.

Got a Peter Pan Peanut butter not to long ago. It was one of those larger containers, you know the $9.00 plus size. Bought it home, took the top off and the seal under the lid, that paper thing attached to the rim of the jar ... was gone. Um.... nope! I just threw it out! I'm just that way.
