My propane regulator indicators stay red even after turning valves open. They normally would change to Green depending on which tank I am currently running off of. I can’t get any gas to travel into the trailer. Both pigtails show slight cracking in the rubber with a faint smell of propane. So I guess my question is. Would a leaky pigtail cause a regulator to shut down?

I'd replace the pigtails, which you need to do regardless, and see if that solves the issue...don't think it will. How old is the regulator?

No need to second guess the issue. Get a new regulator and pigtails.I recommend the Cavagna brand for both.

Pigtails and regulator/changeover valves are like tires and brakes. Consumables that need replacing now and then.As for the brands.. I am pretty sure I have tried them all with not much difference between them.I actually carry spares. One year I was on a cold weather hunt on the North Rim. The regulator failed, leaving us with no propane to the TT.I had to run into Flagstaff to get a new one, missing a day of hunting.

Propane tanks have a built in safety . If you open the valve quickly these will sense a leak and shut off the flow. Have you checked this ? Might be your regulator and hoses are not the problem .

I had this regulator and found it very difficult to read. Sometimes it looked like the cylinder was empty and still had some. Then wait for the indicator to rise a bit more and turns out both are about empty. Constant guessing game as the very small indicator creeps up in the tiny window.

I prefer Marshall Excelsior regulators and hoses. All US made and US components and they work well.

MEGR-253P regulator with inverted flare pigtail connection fittings.

Mounting bracket for regulator that hangs over the threaded rod between the tanks

Vent cover that snaps over the vent on the regulator

15 inch stainless braided pigtail hoses with ACME nut and reverse flare ends -- NEED TWO

Or save $20 and buy the rubber/plastic hose pigtails, still MEC.

$109.60 for all of that, or $20 less for the cheaper pigtails.

New hoses for sure. Weigh the bottles, they might be empty since you know you have a leak.

The excess flow check valve is in the pigtail (it’s part of the green Acme nut), not the propane tank OPD valve. The OPD valve has a spring loaded shutoff that will not allow flow unless the Acme nut is screwed in fully, but it does not sense excess flow.
