Diesel to Gas Power Observation

I continue to see more and more 3/4 ton Ram Hemi's on the road and I'm starting to see some 7.3 Super Duty's on the road as well. I suspect this trend will continue as this couple have made the change for their towing needs.

If I were buying a new truck primarily for towing and/or hauling I would most likely buy diesel. But if the truck was primarily used as a daily driver with occasional towing/hauling it would be gas. Bought my first diesel in 2004 when diesel was still less than gas. Shortly after diesel moved higher and has rarely be less than gas since. And certainly not in a number of years. A few months ago diesel was as much as $1.80 to $2.00 higher than gas. Back down to a more "reasonable" $1.10-$1.20 or so more now. :S

Diesel may get 20-30% better fuel mileage towing/hauling but I haven't seen near that for daily driving, whether highway, city, or combo.

The attention whoores who made that YooToob about their pickup trucks sound like that guy comparing insurance rates of one model to the trim level of another….clueless.
But more power to em. Marketing still works and someone’s gotta go buy those new trucks!

18mo from now, suppose the fuel price gap closes, guy gets sick of only having 40% of the torque he usta have and the next video will be of their dog slobbering all over the back seat of another $100k truck as they drive it to the dealer to trade for a diesel!

Getting gas with my Fifth Wheel trailer in tow is a pain...been there done that.

This should at least go the normal gas vs. diesel debate...what y'all think? ten pages before it gets shut down...LOL

It is not suprising. Gas is cheaper right now.
I have been driving diesels since 2000. The price of diesel vs gas has swung back and forth many times since then. Twice there was a pipeline
problem and gas just wasn't availible. There are two constants. Gas propenents will always crow about how smart they were when gas is cheaper, and fall silent when it is not.... And diesel ALWAYs gets about 30% better MPGs


I want to say since ULSD hit the market, diesel as been ~$0.60/gal more than gas with the exception of the last two years.

As for GM gas trucks I've always seen a lot of them in the HD line for years, but with the 6.6 gas paired to the 10 speed that increasing trend may happen.

I agree. The Hemi's a darn good engine. Those saying diesel is 20-30% more . . . AT LEAST 30% more around here. 30% better fuel economy . . . maybe. HOWEVER, have they factored in the $9,595 additional cost for the diesel on the Ram 2500? Conveniently, no.

Will they get that amount back at resale time? Possibly, but only time will tell.

I am waiting on my 2024 gas 6.6 with the 10 sp. I had the 2020 gas dually, and had no issues in Michigan towing my trailer or the 15k loaded gooseneck. If the 10sp improves fuel economy, I will most likely make the following tow vehicle gas. The price difference in January has been more like 40% - 50% higher.

Another factor to think about is the fact the emission control systems on the diesels lack of dependability. This means the diesel has lost a major sales point.
Then I think many that if their gas engine will last as long as most other components of the truck where is the advantage in a engine that will last 2-3 times longer?
Still no glider kits for light duty trucks.

With diesel running 20-30% more per gallon and getting 20-30% more MPG...any claims of fuel efficiency gains becomes a wash.

And with gas engines capable of ever larger tow ratings, much of the diesel advantage goes away. Especially when looking at up front costs.

I would still lean diesel if over 14-16k but much below that range, gas is a very effective combination. In the middle of that range it would likely depend on the number of miles and driving conditions.

So gassers are getting more powerful….and so are diesels….
Not sure what the news is here. Buy what ya think fits ya.
And in these peoples case and so many, spend, upgrade, spend more, down grade, still spend more, change your mind, spend even more…..
These types of folks were made for dealers!

And his wife must be a total Nancy, since you can almost hear a mouse fart in the cab of a new Cummins pickup. If that’s too loud, wait til that 7.3 drops 4 or 5 gears to get up the hill!
