Having done both it seems to me to be a matter of choice and preference. Each has advantages/disadvantages. Rather than debate fuel costs and efficiencies, maybe look at long term use and wear?
The reason that larger trucks and buses have diesel engines is because they can run longer, hundreds of thousands of miles without a major overhaul but if you are not planning to drive hundreds of thousands of miles, then maybe not necessary? The reason larger Class A motorhomes are mostly diesel is GVW, pulling power, torque, etc. But there are different strokes for different folks and no one is absolutely right or wrong, just really what you need, what you want and what you like with all the reasons why and why not.
