I've towed with a gas Sub Z71 (pop-up) and got 12.5 or so mpg, towed the same pop-up with our new 6.0 PSD Ex. and got about 16mpg. I had to talk my wife into it(her run around car) she now loves it says it gets better gas milage about 14mpg town 19mpg Hwy.
We just got back from towing our new TT from KC to California (Mickey for springbreak) for two weeks fully loaded TT weighing about 8,600lbs. It was I40 most of way, we hit rain, strong head and side winds most of the way and if any of you know that route it's elevation gain all the way till you drop into Los Angeles, majority of the route is above 4,000ft.
The rumor is diesels don't do well in the cold (never got above 45 on the way out) or do well in elevation. Our results on the way out we averaged 10.5 mpg and over 11mpg towing on the way back going about 70-75mph never falling below 60mph on the passes.
I'm a diesel guy now.
