Diesel vs gas......................

OK folks, there have been a few to many diesel vs gas threads that have shall we say gone to "Hell and a hand basket"! So if all of you would put in you BEST, no flaming reasons for going gas vs diesel, pro and con, I will either leave your thread, or copy and paste pertinant info to the 4 posts of pro and con of diesel or gas. This can include the GM 8.1 vs Dmax or Ford V-8/10 vs PSD etc too.

Be real and honest in you answers, not hear say, flaming etc PLEASE!

If posts are good ones, I will leave, if inflamatory or trolling in nature, they will be deleted! I will get this stick'd to the top for future parusing for those that need this type of info.

Added 6-23-04

We are getting closer to answers I am looking for etc.

Stuff like Ken's - T-Bone posts are good. There are a few others of you that have not posted, some with a 9 point question and answer type to figure out how you went with one or the other. If you are one of those, PLEASE repost in this thread. I may have to look up whom has done this and PM you, but if you think this is you, you now know what to do.

Also, for those of you with $ per gallon for either fuel right now, I would prefer to see a post with ...."in my area, diesel is typically .10 less than unleaded" then explain your numbers. As currently in the Seattle area, diesel and unleaded are any where from 2.05 -2.30 per gallon, with mid test .10 more and premium about .20 more, with equal high low splits. Two weeks ago those prices were upwards of .30 -.40 per gallon more. people were posting $ per gallon that were for me. "I wish" If someone is reading your post a year from now, they may want to know where your paying 1.65, when the price of fuel is over $3 per gallon. Let's keep prices out of it if possible.

Bert and tin tipi, got into a good discusion on the pros and cons of RPM's, drive train etc. I would prefer to NOT see the quote of the other in responding threads, maybe just write a quick wording of re tranny gearing, instead of the whole 40 words or so in that paragragh, so the repsonse is shorter if possible quicker and easier to read etc.

I have deleted some 15+/- posts, that were off topic etc. Please note, I am trying to keep this at the top, as the ONLY gas/diesel thread in this area. So if one is trying to decide, we do not have to go thru this BS any more. As such, I will be deleting ANY future posts close to resembling this type of topic. I may have to change "this" title to a better one, if one has a better sounding title, to be more positive, better claification, let me know here, or in a PM/e-mail, what ever you feel most comfortible with.

Again thank you for all of you that are keeping responses positive, etc.

Also we could use a few more positive reasons to go gas, as many can see I have both gas and diesel, both have a place! Both have positive reasons to buy that fuel, lets keep the threads etc to that purpose only!

Well ....yea right. My MPG is fact, your numbers are fiction. My truck also fits in my garage with plenty of room left over. My oil change cost me an extra 6 quarts of oil. The diesel option is 5k, not the 15k you quote. I shower every day, I smell no odor. My engine runs as smooth as any gasser. The diesel has nothing to do with ride height. I do not understand your wet feet problem and what this has to do with a diesel vs gas? I will never believe you run in the 5's in a 1/4 mile and get 22 MPG. Just what part of your story is the truth? You appear to be dazed and confused. Musta been how fast that turbo diesel flew by going up that last hill.
Reading you information tells me your under 50 so your words speech for themselfs and I don't talk to people anymore under 50. And I raise that one year each year.

22 mpg running to and from work makes a diesel a no brainer for me.
I always get 22 mpg and 0-60 in the 5s, no smell, shake, no wet feet, high price oil jobs, smoother ride, easy to climb into, mine fit in the garage, and cost $15,000 less.

I need some advice, I plan a purchasing a 5er and I am going to be a full timer. I want to drive some place. Park for awhile, when I get tired of being in that place I want to move on. In the meantime I will be working to pay my weekly expenses so I will have to drive to and from work each day. What kind a TV would suit my needs best?

P.S.
I plan on driving west where there are mountains

Thanks for all your help

I used to tow my Pioneer trailer with my Toyota double cab with a 3.4 V-6. The reason we purchased the small Pioneer trailer is, I "thought" that it was the most weight I could tow with the Toyota. It turned out it was a bit too heavy for long trips.

That brings me to the 2006 Duramax that we purchased last month. It is the one equipped with the new more powerful, quieter engine with six speed transmission. It is indeed big, bad, powerful and expensive. Around town I get 14.5 / 14.8 miles per gallon and freeway driveling 17.5 to 19 MPG. However, this is traveling at the speed limit and being light footed. How much longer I will be able to drive like that is debatable.

Our primary decision to buy the Duramax was so that we did not have to consider our tow vehicle during the next several (future) travel trailer upgrades. This truck will pull pretty much anything made.

Also, with this truck my wife can easily tow our trailer and she is not even a very good diver. Heck, I won't sleep wile sheโ€™s driving our minivan down the freeway. The tonnage (3/4 ton) of the truck delivers the handling side of the equation while the diesel power allows her to simply put it in cruse control while driving over the mountains.

All said and done, it was a good choice for us.

Once again this topic is as old as the hills and so are many of the offerings here.

We tow with an 8.1/Allison combo and it does just great. We don't need to scream the engine and the Allison keeps the engine in its sweat spot most all the time. Trailer grosses at 12.3k and if I watch the big pedal I can average over 9 mpg on a tank. By anyone's book that isn't very good but nothing towing that weight does substantially better. Diesel in our area also remains at between .40 and .50 cents more per gallon than gas so recouping the added expense of a diesel equipped rig takes a lot of miles. Many people simply don't keep their trucks long enough to make that issue much of an issue at all or long enough to gather the 3-400,000 miles they think they'll put on their diesels. Take a look anywhere on this forum. You'll not see too many rigs with hundreds of thousands of miles on them towing their big new trailers. Reality speaks otherwise. In fact, there is demand in Class A rigs for more luxurious gas rigs. Why? It's because the diesel rigs and their chassis are significantly more expensive than a gas counterpart and many people realize they simply won't see the rig rack up big miles. So they are looking for something that fits into their budgets better and still get the job done. Have you ever seen the difference in over the road performance between today's gas and diesel Class A's?

If you also want to compare gas and diesel and their merits please compare current offerings and not compare your bright shiny new diesel to your old gas 150/1500 and declare that the diesel wins hands down. Just what kind of comparison is that? Funny how you read that here over and over again.

I've towed with a gas Sub Z71 (pop-up) and got 12.5 or so mpg, towed the same pop-up with our new 6.0 PSD Ex. and got about 16mpg. I had to talk my wife into it(her run around car) she now loves it says it gets better gas milage about 14mpg town 19mpg Hwy.

We just got back from towing our new TT from KC to California (Mickey for springbreak) for two weeks fully loaded TT weighing about 8,600lbs. It was I40 most of way, we hit rain, strong head and side winds most of the way and if any of you know that route it's elevation gain all the way till you drop into Los Angeles, majority of the route is above 4,000ft.

The rumor is diesels don't do well in the cold (never got above 45 on the way out) or do well in elevation. Our results on the way out we averaged 10.5 mpg and over 11mpg towing on the way back going about 70-75mph never falling below 60mph on the passes.

I'm a diesel guy now.

Always start with the basics, up tire pressue to max,air filter-replace, clean the maf sensor. Then call your gm diesel shop and inquire about computer flash updates. There are some specific to mileage issues. Also hand calc milage as the dash computers are notorious for being wrong. Try www.dieselplace.com for duramax specific advice.

I have a 2004 2500HD GMC Crew Cab Duramax. I'm only getting about 11mpg in city and about 9 when I'm towing. I have several friends that own similar vehicles, or the same, but they get 17mpg and about 13 towing. Is there anything that I can do to my truck to get the same mpg? I love my truck, but would like a little more mileage.

Frankly, I don't care how much I spend on gas. Here's why:

I have to have it so I buy it. I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab, 6.5 bed, Allison Tran, 8.1, with a 26 GALLON TANK! How's that for a double whammy!! I love the truck. It suits my needs.

At least with that small tank you don't have to make bathroom stops since you must stop every couple hours for gas.
