I have a 2006 GMC HD Gas burner. It has the Allison transmission, is a four door crew cab, and has 10-ply 16" tires on it. I live in Alabama and did not know it until I went to purchase a tag for it that it was considered a "special tag" truck because of its weight and capacity. According to the DMV it weighs over 8,000 lbs. so I had to buy a more expensive tag. I have a 35 ft. Pilgrim bumper pull with 2 slides and it pulls it like it is not even back there. I also own a construction company and work it a good bit. I have put a pallet of concrete in the back of it with tool boxes and calculated the weight and had over 4100 lbs. in the bed! It is the only time I have ever seen that truck squat. I have the 6.0 not the V-10 gas burner. I am really wanting to upgrade to a 5th wheel toy hauler but am wanting input on if I will have trouble hauling a 38 to 40 ft. toy hauler. I am like the other gentleman, the biggest problem I have is that the title to my truck and trailer are in my gun vault! :) Can I pull the bigger 5th wheels or do I need to upgrade to a dually?
You may have got ripped off at DMV. Your 2006 2500hd weighs about 7000lbs. The GVWR is over 8000lbs, that's what they usually use.
Are you sure you have an Allison transmission? Never seen them paired with the 6.0. They were paired with the 8.1 (V8 not V10 ) and Duramax.
The gas diesel debate is like the song that never ends. A toy hauler that size, and loaded, in all likelihood needs a diesel DRW.
